MATCHDAY 34: THE FIGHT IS ON

16 Apr 2019
Eight matchdays are remaining and almost everything is still undefined at Segunda, perhaps the only thing for sure is the promotion of Osasuna and the demotions of Nástic and Córdoba CF.

The latest matchday at Segunda just increased the validity of the idea that things are going to be defined until the last day.  With eight games to go almost everything is at stake. At the top the only thing that seems inevitable is the promotion of CA Osasuna, the Navarrans achieved a 13th straight victory at home hosting Deportivo (2-1) and they already have a comfortable six-point advantage over third place.

The rest is on fire regarding the promotion. Granada CF lost visiting Sporting Gijón (1-0) and now they are tied in points with Albacete Balompié, side that dropped two points with a late goal of Carlos Castro hosting Elche CF (1-1).

Despite the results, both clubs are the main candidates to get the second ticket for direct promotion as Málaga CF and Deportivo are imploding. The Andalusians lost hosting relegation-troubled Extremadura UD (1-2) and coach Muñiz was fired, and the new boss will be former Depor Víctor Sánchez Del Amo.

Meanwhile, the defeat of Depor in Pamplona meant that they lost two straight games for the first time and now they are out of the promotion zone for the first time since matchday 5 (September 2018). The situation was seized by Cádiz CF, side that jumped into the fourth place after a hat-trick of Machis demolished UD Las Palmas (0-3).

RCD Mallorca also stayed in the promotion zone after a late goal of Salva Sevilla rescued a point in the visit to CD Numancia (1-1). Real Oviedo added the points of the game with FC Reus and now there’s a group of six teams in a frame of only four points that dispute three places in the playoffs.

The situation at the top of the standings:

place team points GF GA
1 Osasuna 67 48 32
2 Albacete 61 44 26
3 Granada 61 40 22
4 Cádiz 56 47 29
5 Mallorca 55 45 32
6 Málaga 55 34 26
7 Deportivo 54 42 27
8 Sporting 52 37 29

The battle to avoid relegation seems to have one thing clear: Gimnástic Tarragona and Córdoba CF are going to join FC Reus at Segunda B. The Catalans lost visiting Almeria UD (3-0) and they are now ten points away from safety, while the Andalusians suffered a severe blow hosting D Lugo (0-4), side that precisely marks the salvation.

So, for now the relegation seems to be a matter of three clubs trying to avoid the last relegation spot: CD Lugo, Extremadura UD and Real Zaragoza. Los Maños are only two points above the pit after losing at home against AD Alcorcón (0-2).  Rayo Majadahonda and CD Tenerife must also stay alert, in this matchday the Madrilenians lost hosting the Canarians (1-3) and both teams are now tied in points four points above the pit.

The situation at the bottom of the standings:

place team points GF GA
17 Zaragoza 38 37 44
18 Lugo 37 35 42
19 Extremadura 36 37 43
20 Nástic 27 20 51
21 Córdoba 26 38 64
22 Reus 0 16 40

MATCHDAY 35: BOTH FRONTS COLLIDE
Teams fighting in the playoff zone are facing clubs trying to avoid the pit. Granada CF visit CD Lugo, while Deportivo host Extremadura UD. RCD Mallorca host Rayo Majadahonda. An interesting match is the visit of Málaga CF to AD Alcorcón, while leaders CA Osasuna visit Elche CF.

Real Zaragoza are resting and will get the points of the game with FC Reus. The matchday is completed with other five games: Albacete Balompié Vs. UD Las Palmas; Gimnástic Tarragona Vs. Sporting Gijón; Cádiz CF Vs. CD Numancia; Real Oviedo Vs. Córdoba CF & CD Tenerife Vs. UD Almería.
