REVIEW: DEPORTIVO 1 – EXTREMADURA 2 (LIGA)

22 Apr 2019
New and painful defeat for a Deportivo without football and without luck. The dream of promotion fades away.

BEFORE THE GAME
Several changes with José Luis Martí debuting as a coach at the Riazor, the Majorcan coach entirely changed midfield territory an allowed Vitor Silva to make his first appearance as a starter. Borja Valle was also a novelty in attack.

The draw was a 4-4-2 with b>Dani Giménez covering the goal, Eneko Bóveda played at the right side in defence, the left was for Diego Caballo, the central positions were covered by Pablo Mari and Domingos Duarte. Didier Moreno joined Vitor Silva at midfield. Pedro Sánchez attacked from the right wing, Edu Expósito did it from the left, then Borja Valle joined Quique González in attack.

At Extremadura UD, Manu Mosquera presented the expected team with Alberto Perea joining Alfredo Ortuño in attack. The team needed the points in order to leave the relegation zone after the defeat of CD Lugo (1-2) Vs. Granada CF.

FIRST HALF
The experiments ordered by Martí didn’t work, the team was once again flat and once again it conceded a soft goal against a rival that didn’t do too much to create some damage. Deportivo started playing with a 4-2-3-1 scheme, Vitor Silva was the playmaker with Edu Expósito and Pedro Sánchez switching positions on the wings.

The first shot on target in the game came at minute 5, Pedro Sánchez released a low shot in a direct free-kick for Depor and visiting goalie Casto Espinosa caught the ball. Despite the high pressure of the visiting team, they were missing the passes at midfield, so Depor was the side having the initiative.

Kike Márquez started to appear for Extremadura UD, but Depor were still having the ball, though without having clear chances. Their next approximation was a cross that Pedro Sánchez headed out (18’).

And then Extremadura UD found the goal, Bastos released the cross and Roberto Olabe entered alone enough to score from close range. The Riazor was frozen and the team lasted in reacting, the Galicians lacked mobility and ideas to break a defensive like that was already settled.

Pedro Sánchez was the only player that was vertical, at minute 29 he made a solo-play and his shot almost end in an own goal by Pardo.  The best play for Depor came one minute later, Borja Valle was left alone against Casto after a drilling pass from Edu Expósito and the keeper made the save.

Extremadura CF were still having some arrivals, at minute 36, Álex Díez fired from the edge of the area and the ball went over the crossbar. The visiting side was better within the last five minutes, Depor switched the draw into a 4-4-2, but the locals didn’t create more chances to score.

SECOND HALF
The final part started with Christian Santos replacing Vitor Silva, the draw was now a 4-4-2 with Edu Expósito now performing at midfield, with Santos joining Quique González in attack and with Borja Valle attacking from the left wing.

Depor didn’t have an explosive start as the and wished, actually it was the opposite as the team was still having big lagoons in attack and started to play on long throws searching for no one. Their first approximation was a cross from Borja Valle that Quique González sent out (51’).

Then Deportivo met the woodwork, it was a secondary play in a free-kick in which Pedro Sánchez released a cross searching for Quique González, Bastos deflected the ball before the arrival of Didier Moreno an it hit the post and went out.

And from the best chance in the game, Extremadura CF found the second goal. It was a direct free-kick action in which Kike Márquez hit the wall and then Álex Díez collected the loose ball to score in a big error of Dani Giménez.

Truly Deportivo played a bad game, but also to point out that the Galicians lacked fortune, because they never were inferior to the rival and caressed the equalizer to allow the second goal in the next play.  Depor were now facing a two-goal disadvantage and Martí made a desperate change with the entry of Cartabia for Bóveda.

Christian Santos had the next chance after collecting a cross from Pedro Sánchez, but Castomade the save (59’). The final substitution at Depor was the entry of Pedro Mosquera for Didier Moreno. At this height in the game Depor were now relying no individual plays, Cartabia was leading the charge, but Depor missed the punch of the first round and it seemed defeated.

Still, the locals pulled a goal in a big error of the visiting goalie. Pedro Mosquera fired from the edge of the area, Casto was unable to contain the ball and Christian Santos was there to push the ball in. Depor pushed in the final minutes, but it didn’t create any chance, just an action in which Borja Valle failed to define inside the area (89’)

AFTER THE GAME
New defeat and new poor spectacle for a Deportivo that tried, but that's only a ghost of the team in the first round. The Galicians lacked ideas and also some luck against a rival that only suffered within the final five minutes.

Depor are now four points under the playoff zone and the dream of promotion is fading way. The next game is the visit to CD Numancia (Friday, 21h00 CET). Pablo Mari will miss that game after picking a fifth yellow card in this match.
