REVIEW: NUMANCIA 1 – DEPORTIVO 2 (LIGA)

27 Apr 2019
Deportivo returned to winning ways, it scored two early goals and later didn’t have problems until Somma was sent off in a strange way.

BEFORE THE GAME
Coach José Luis Martí was presenting an offensive formation, a 4-3-3 with Carlos Fernández, Borja Valle and Quique González playing at the same time. Carlos Fernández was ft to play, so Saúl García was dropped from the final roster.

Dani Giménez was the starting keeper, Eneko Bóveda covered the right side in defence, Diego Caballo played on the left, Michelle Somma and Domingos Duarte were the centre-backs. Edu Expósito, Cartabia and Álex Bergantiños performed at midfield, then the trident in attack was composed by Quique González, Borja Valle and Carlos Fernández.

At CD Numancia, coach Aritz López Garaikept the 4-3-3 system, but with novelties. Derik Osede wasn’t fit to play, so Alberto Escassi was performing at the centre of the defence, with Gaizka Campos making his debut at the goal. Higinio Marín also earned a spot at the starting formation joining Yaw Yeboah and David Rodríguez in attack.

FIRST HALF
Deportivo finally had a placid first half; almost without looking for it, the Galicians found two goals plus a nervous rival that never knew how to attack. The Galicians looked comfortable with the ball and even when they lost it at the end of the half.

The game started with an early goal from Deportivo, a combination between Quique González and Borja Valle left the latter alone before debutant Gaizka Campos and the striker didn’t miss from close range.

And Deportivo’s explosive start didn’t end there, Carlos Fernández tried from the edge of the area and Gaizka Campos made the save (5’). Three minutes later the Galicians found the second goal. It was a corner-kick released by Cartabia from the right, the high cross was found by Michelle Somma at the box, and the downward header went in by the far post.

CD Numancia were in shock, there where whistles coming rom the stands and their first arrival came until minute 17. Fran Villalba released a cross from the left and Diamanka headed the ball out. After this action the locals started to have the ball and the initiative, but Depor weren’t suffering; actually, they seemed to be enjoying making, recovering and passing the ball as the rival was having big problems to block the passing game by the visiting team.

The locals seemed flat in attack, lacking depth and playing through long balls, their best opportunity at the middle of the half was a long-distance shot of Higinio Marín that went close to the crossbar (30’), eight minutes later Alberto Escassi

Depor lowered the intensity within the last fifteen minutes, but the visiting side was still looking as the team with the clearest idea. At minute 40, a free-kick of Cartabia was close to end in the third goal, but the ball hit a defender and went out.

SECOND HALF
The second half had two different parts, the game under control until Somma was on the pitch, and the lack of order after the expulsion of the Italian.  Depor ended allowing a goal, but kept a golden victory.

CD Numancia tried to have the initiative at the start of the second half, but again they didn’t know how to break Depor’s defence. Their long throws were easily controlled by the defence. Meanwhile, the Galicians looked more dangerous in the counterattack.

At minute 47, a counterattack led by Borja Valle failed as he couldn’t pass the ball to Quique González, though later Carlos Fernández collected the ball and his low attempt was blocked by Gaizka Campos.

Deportivo started to commit errors passing and clearing the ball inside the area, but the locals didn’t seize these chances. Still, CD Numancia were looking more dangerous compared to the first half. At minute 63, Fran Villalba collected a high cross from the right, but he sent the ball out.

Deportivo started to improve in attack, but the Galicians suffered a set-back as Somma was sent out with two yellow cards in a strange situation. The Italian was trying to head the ball in a corner-kick in favour, he collided with a rival and Edu Expósito scored with a low shot, but the referee disallowed the goal and showed the red card to the defender.

Martí moved the bench and there were two changes, Pedro Sánchez and Iñigo López entered for Borja Valle and Cartabia. Iñigo was debuting on the season as an emergency backup at the centre of the defence. Twenty minutes were left and the true is that the expulsion didn’t change the outcome, but it changed the tide, because Numancia started to have opportunities.

Before, Deportivo could have scored a third goal.  It was a counterattack in which Pedro Sánchez met Gaizka Campos firing from the right corner of the box (74’). Then Vicente Gómez replaced Carlos Fernández.

The best chances for CD Numancia came within the last ten minutes, at minute 80 Guillermo Fernández met the crossbar after a big save by Dani Giménez. And the goal for the locals arrive after a cross from Ganea that ended in a strong header by Guillermo past Dani Giménez.

Suddenly, the locals saw the chance to rescue a point, but they wasted their two opportunities. David Rodríguez connected the ball after a long cross from the right, but Dani Giménez was there to block the attempt (90+1’). One minute later Markel Etxeberriasent the ball over the crossbar after firing from the edge of the area.

AFTER THE GAME
The explosive start of Deportivo had a reward: three points after facing a crippled rival that never knew how to manage the situation. Things twisted after the red card over Somma, but the Galicians returned to winning ways despite allowing a late goal.

The result helps Deportivo to keep the promotion aspirations, the Galicians remain out of the playoff zone, but will reduce the distance as there are direct meetings at the top during the weekend.  The next game is the visit to Real Zaragoza (Saturday, 18h00 CET).
