REVIEW: DEPORTIVO 1 – CÁDIZ 1 (LIGA)

13 May 2019
Deportivo were the better team, but dropped two golden points in the last minutes. The Galicians could be pulled out of the playoff zone.

BEFORE THE GAME
The main novelty in the 4-4-2 scheme of José Luis Martí was to see Nahuel Leiva covering the left wing leaving Borja Valle on the bench. Meanwhile, Saúl García was prefeed before Caballo for the left spot at defence.

Dani Giménez was the starting keeper, Eneko Bóveda covered the right side in defence, the left was for Saúl. Domingos Duarte and Pablo Mari covered the central positions. Edu Expósito and Álex Bergantiños were the centre midfielders, Fede Cartabia attacked for the right wing, Nahuel did it from the left, then Carlos Fernández and Quique González were the centre forwards.

At Cádiz CF; coach Álvaro Cervera presented the expected lineup. It was a 4-5-1 figure with Darwin Machís and Manu Vallejo as the main threats. Both players have scored eight goals before this match. Still there was a problem during the warming up as José Garrido got injured and he was replaced by Álex Fernández.

FIRST HALF
Good first half by Deportivo. It had the initiative and also faced problems to create scoring chances, but it pushed in the final stretch and found a deserved goal. The script was pretty clear since the start, Depor were having the initiative and the ball, while Cádiz CF were holding and waiting to release the counterattack. The locals had fluency, but the best they can do within the first ten minutes was to earn a couple of lateral free-kicks.

Depor were insisting on the left flank through Nahuel as Correa was having problems (he was booked early in the game). The first chance to score came at minute 12, a cross from Edu Expósito was headed by Bóveda, but it was an easy catch for visiting goalie Alberto Cifuentes.

The next approximation for Depor was a lateral free-kick in which the cross of Cartabia was connected by Pablo Mari and a defender cleared the ball to corner-kick (20’). The locals were stuck and were only creating danger in set-pieces. At minute 26, Álex Bergantiños headed out a corner-kick of Cartabia.

Cádiz’s first approximation in the game was a free-kick action of Ager Aketxe that was saved by Dani Giménez (29’). The game was turning to be boring, but Depor pushed in the final stretch, first Carlos Fernández hit the post after been assisted by Cartabia (39’).

And then Deportivo claimed the lead. Eneko Bóveda stole the ball at the right side, then he released a high volley that went into the left side of the box, Cifuentes arrived late and Quique González rifled the ball into the net. It was a deserved reward for the best team on the pitch during the first half.

SECOND HALF
The final part was more entertaining. It cannot be said that Depor played badly as it was containing the rival and creating some chances, until the equalizer arrived. Then the game became crazy and each side could have scored the winning goal.

Cádiz CF started the second part trying to push, at minute 48, Machis attempted a low shot deflected by Dani Giménez. The game turned to be attractive, because the Andalusians were now trying to have the initiative, while Depor were finding enough room for the counterattack.

The visiting side made offensive substitutions and Martí moved the bench with the entry of Pedro Sánchez for Nahuel.  Th winger made a decent game and the entry of Pedro gave more stability at midfield though at the expense of losing depth on the sides.

No big opportunities were saw in this stretch, but the game continued to be attractive. Depor looked better at the moment of attacking as it was finding big lagoons, but the Galicians were failing to create the opportunities.

Cádiz CF started to lose the nerves and were having problems to create opportunities. Their best chance at the middle of the half was a wide shot of Ager Aketxe firing from the edge of the area (65’). The second substitution for Depor was the entry of Borja Valle for Cartabia, who was exhausted.

The game seemed to be under control, but Cádiz were going to find the equalizer. Substitute David Querol made a solo-play, he was able to surpass Pablo Mari and then rifled a rocket into the top-corner of Dani Giménez.

Then the game became crazy as it retuned into the scenario of the first half. Depor needed a goal and pushed forward, while Cádiz CF was now the side finding the lagoons for the counterattack. Carlos Fernández could have scored the second goal after collecting a cross from Bóveda, but Cifuentes made the save (82’).

The craziest minute was the 86. Depor were trying to push and Quique González was having the chance to fire from inside the area, but lasted too much and was blocked by a defender, and in the counterattack  Querol released a low shot that was brilliantly deflected by Dani Giménez.

AFTER THE GAME
Not a bad game for Deportivo. The Galicians made the effort and were holding on the victory until a counterattack cost two points. The outcome is negative, but at least the team recovered the sensations before the negative streak started.

The result could pull Deportivo out of the promotion zone, but it will depend on the result of the game Málaga CF Vs. Real Oviedo. The next game is the visit to CD Lugo (Sunday, 20h00 CET).
