PREVIEW: LUGO – DEPORTIVO (LIGA)

19 May 2019
Crucial game for both teams, Lugo want to bury the hatchet with the public and pave the road to the permanence, while Deportivo need consistency in the way to promotion.

Referee: Gorka Sagués Oscoz
Kick-off: 20h00 CET (Anxo Carro)

STATISTICS: POOR RECORD AT THE ANXO CARRO
One of the reasons why CD Lugo are currently fighting to avoid relegation is their poor form at home. Los Albivermellos already lost the same number of games than their victories at the Anxo Carro (7), and their 26 points in 19 home games represents the fifth worst mark in the league only above Gimnástic Tarragona (25), Real Zaragoza (24), Extremadura UD (23) and Córdoba CF (22).

Meanwhile, Deportivo arrive to the game after two straight away victories, Los Blanquiazules have now added 29 points in 19 away matches, it’s the fourth best mark in the league only below Albacete Balompié (31), Málaga CF (31) and Granada CF (30).

This is only the third time with Depor visiting the Anxo Carro playing for a league competition, for the Tercera season 1974/75 Deportivo lost 1-0 there, and for the Segunda campaign 2013/14 it was a 2-2 draw with Fernando Vázquez’s team wasting a two-goal lead within the last 20 minutes of the game (May 3, 2014).

DEPORTIVO: CONSISTENCY
With the dream of direct promotion practically gone, Deportivo must now focus in winning the higher number of points and reach the promotion through the playoffs. So, the Galicians need to avoid more failures, and it’s that, throughout the season, the Galicians have lacked consistency in the results.

Depor are coming after failing to clinch a third straight victory for the first time on the season, now it will try to win at the Anxo Carro, a result that would mean to add 10 of the 12 points disputed within matchdays 36 and 39, something that the team only did twice before on this campaign. And taking in mind that it will need to win more games after this, it means that Depor are currently needing their best streak of the season if they want to continue aspiring to a promotion.

Team news: Since the trip is short to Lugo, the team will train on Sunday and coach José Luis Martí will released the roster for the game until hours before the kick-off. Álex Bergantiños completed the session on Saturday and David Simón received the medical okay to play on Friday, therefore Michael Krohn-Dehli is the only man at the injury room.

Man to watch: Striker Quique González. CD Lugo is known for having a defensive line with big lagoons; before the goalless draw with Sporting Gijón, they conceded 10 goals in the previous 3 games. It’s the type of defence that suits the Valladolid-born attacker, who is coming after scoring against Cádiz CF, his 16th goal of the campaign

Picked players: Roster to be released until Sunday.

Predicted lineup: (4-4-2) Dani Giménez – Bóveda, Domingos Duarte, Pablo Mari, Saúl – Cartabia, Álex Bergantiños, Edu Expósito, Borja Valle – Quique González, Carlos Fernández.

LUGO: SIMILARITIES
Deportivo and CD Lugo are fighting for different goals, but their path to their current situation is common and is surrounded by a continuous disapproval by the fans.  Like the case of Deportivo, Los Albivermellos already had three coaches and their president, also named Tino [Saqués], is under a big pressure to leave the club.

The fans are mad for the poor choices made throughout the season that has leave to the current relegation problems, and the most recent confrontation is related to this game, because the club decided to name it as “day of the club”, which means that everyone wanting to attend has to pay the ticket price, including the season ticket holders, a situation considered as a “cash grab” in a moment when the teams needs support. The big protest caused a retreat by the club and in the end the day of the club appointment was removed. So, Depor will find a stand ready to support their team, but that also won’t think twice before whistling their president.

Team news: Coach Eloy Jiménez is missing side defenders Gerard Valentín and Luis Ruiz for suspension, while the players out injured are goalkeeper Pablo Cacharrón (knee), right-back Serge Leuko (Achilles) plus centre midfielders Tete Morente (muscle) and Antonio Campillo (knee). It’s not clear yet if he will choose to play with the line of five defenders used against Sporting or he will return to the 4-4-2.

Man to watch: Striker Cristian Herrera. The Canarian attacker is now the top-scorer at the club, his nine goals in liga (plus one in Copa), might not look too impressive, but to point out that four of thse goals came in his last six presentations with the team.

Picked players: Roster to be released until Sunday.

Predicted lineup: (4-4-2) Juan Carlos - Campabadal, Miguel Vieira, Josete, José Carlos - Iriome, Seoane, Aburjania, Lazo - Manu Barreiro, Christian Herrera.
