Drama at the Riazor with Depor about to say good-bye to the playoff, but rescued by a last-minute penalty by Carlos Fernández, just when the rival was playing better.

Coach José Luis Martí presented the expected lineup the only novelty was to see Borja Valle attacking from the right flank. Nahuel Leiva was on the bench after bene a starter in the previous two games.

Dani Giménez covered the goal, Eneko Bóveda played at the right side of the defence, the left was for Saúl García. The central positions were covered by Pablo Mari and Domingos Duarte. Edu Expósito and Álex Bergantiños played at midfield. Fede Cartabia attacked from the right wing, Borja Valle did it from the left, then Carlos Fernández and Quique González were the centre forwards.

At RCD Mallorca, coach Vicente Moreno presented the expected 4-4-2 formation, Salva Sevilla, Lago Junior and Ante Budimir were the references in attack. Ex-Fabril Dani Rodriguez was a starter at the Majorcan team.

Not a bad first part for Deportivo. The Galicians had the ball in large frames of the game, and Mallorca were committing errors with the passes, but the locals never seized these plays. The game started with Depor pressing and stepping into the rival’s area, but RCD Mallorca had the first chance to score in the game after Lago Junior missed the target at the far post after connecting a corner-kick (4’).

Depor’s first approximation was a shot of Carlos Fernández that passed close to the crossbar (6’). The Galicians were looking fine, but had the usual problem of completing a last pass. The Majorcans were more passive, but had speed at the moment of releasing the counterattack.

At minute 15, neither Borja Valle nor Quique González were unable to score after a corner-kick from Cartabia.  Depor were trying, but it lacked ideas and the only chances to score at the middle of the half were coming on set-pieces.

Precisely, Mallorca suffered a lot defending the corners and also the crosses. At minute 25, Saúl released one that Bóveda headed on target and visiting goalie Manolo Reina cleared the ball to corner-kick. In the next play Cartabia collected the ball at the edge of the area and his shot was saved by Reina.

RCD Mallorca were also committing mistakes passing the ball at their side of the pitch, but Depor didn’t seize these opportunities. At minute 34, Saúl collected the ball after a visiting error, but his cross was badly connected by Borja Valle.

At minute 37, Bóveda attempted a shot that was blocked by Reina, in the next play Dani Rodríguez failed in the output of the ball and Cartabia assisted Edu Expósito, but the ex-Fabril failed firing from outside the area.

The final part can only be described as pure drama. RCD Mallorca grew with the passage of the minutes and deserved to win the game, and just when the promotion dreams were ending, a doubtful penalty pulled Depor back into the fight.

The final part started with a strong shot from Lago Junior that was cleared to corner-kick (47’). Depor were having long ball possessions, but as it happened in the first half, the Galicians lacked to aim in the last pass.

Still, Depor were creating some chances. At minute 58, a cross from Saúl was collected by Cartabia and his low attempt was blocked by Reina. At this height in the game RCD Mallorca seemed more interested in wasting time than in trying to win the game.

But then the game changed and RCD Mallorca tried to take the initiative. After a couple of approximations, substitute Abdón Prats released a shot that was blocked by Dani Giménez (64’). Depor had problems at midfield, but still was reaching the opposite side of the field as there was plenty of space at Mallorca’s back zone.

At minute 65, a new chance for RCD Mallorca was saved by Dani Giménez. This time the shot was released by Ante Budimir. Suddenly Depor were suffering and the first substitution was the entry of Christian Santos for Borja Valle. But the visiting side continued to dominate.

Budimir was close to score at minute 72, the Croatian connected a crossed shot that was saved by Dani Giménez. Vicente Gomez replaced Álex, but Mallorca continued having chances, the next one was a lateral free-kick of Salva Sevilla connected by Valjent and saved by Depor’s goalie (77’), who at this point was the best player at the local team.

Then Quique González got injured and was replaced by Nahuel. Depor had lost the impetus, but Vicente Gómez had a clear chance to win the game after collecting a cross from Saúl, but his shot passed close to the far post (85’).

Deportivo were desperate within the final minutes, but once again didn’t seize the corner-kicks in favour. Closer was RCD Mallorca in a counterattack in which Pervis Estupiñan missed the target (90+2’). And then the miracle happened as Depor was awarded with a doubtful penalty.

RCD Mallorca had a corner-kick in favour and in the counterattack, Nahuel was trying to collect a long pass from midfield and fell inside the area before the pressure of Antonio Raíllo, after the protests from the visiting side, Carlos Fernández didn’t miss from the spot to earn three golden points.

Incredible victory for Deportivo. The Galicians were better in the first part, the second was for the Majorcans and only Dani Giménez kept the team alive, only to see Carlos Fernández pulling some life at the last minute with a penalty that keeps the hopes of reaching the playoff.

Depor are still seventh, but now tied in points with Cádiz CF with only two matchdays to go. The next game is the visit to Elche CF (Sunday, 20h00 CET). All the games of the direct rivals will be played at the same time as this is the penultimate matchday of the regular season.
