PLAYERS REVIEW 2018/19: ATTACKERS

30 Jun 2019
Deportivo returned to have strikers that score goals, though it wasn’t enough to clinch the permanence as the team ended scoreless in the definitive game.

Two strikers that left a positive vibe, other two that were the right complement, plus a winger that didn’t match the expectations. All of this wasn’t enough to score a goal in a definitive game in which the Galicians needed one. The following is the analysis of the attackers that played for Depor in the season.

Quique González -Killer- (3,077 minutes on the season). The Valladolid-born attacker had an explosive start scoring six goals in his first five appearances in liga, after an expulsion against Málaga CF (October 10) his productivity decreased, but he was always there to pull goals despite the team wasn’t playing good football. Truly at times he was losing the ball too frequently, but his 17 goals (one in the playoffs) left him as the second-best scorer in the league.

Carlos Fernández -Skillful- (2,208). Perhaps the most skillful attacker at the squad; Depor were different when he was plugged in and was the perfect complement for Quique González playing in a 4-4-2 system. His best moment was when he exploded at the end of 2018 scoring seven goals in seven meetings, including a hat-trick against Elche CF (October 12). Later the muscle problems reduced the participation of the Andalusian attacker. He ended the season with ten goals added to his tally (two in the playoffs).

Borja Valle -Forced- (2,086).  The success of Quique González and Carlos Fernández affected his performance, he was constantly forced to play on the left wing and he doesn’t have the abilities to play there. For this reason, he was constantly lost in the games and was even sacrificed marking the rivals. He managed to score eight goals though (one in the playoffs).

Christian Santos -Backup- (693). The second victim of the success by Quique González and Carlos Fernández. The Venezuelan attacker was always the fourth choice for both Natxo González and José Luis Martí in the end he only made six appearances as a starter scoring three goals. He wanted to leave as he wasn’t having chances, but after having therapy he changed his attitude.

Nahuel Leiva –Disappointing- (642).  The only natural winger at the team; the Argentine player arrived during the winter window with the hope he was going to revitalize the offensive game of Deportivo. In the end the only thing that was demonstrated is that he was out of shape after not playing too much in the first part of the season. He didn’t score any goal and neither provided an assist, a proof of a null contribution to the offensive game of Deportivo.
