Striker Mamadou Koné is the latest reinforcement of Deportivo, the Ivorian comes loaned from CD Leganés. The deal includes a buyout option.

Carmelo del Pozo anticipated it the day before, and it was official on Friday. Mamadou Koné signs for Deportivo in a loan deal negotiated with CD Leganés.  The Ivorian attacker is 27 and arrives with a buyout clause of one million euros in case of promotion. He joined the trainings the same Friday.

Koné is a striker with a promising career that never took off due to the injuries. He was a big surprise after been signed by Racing Santander in 2010 for €240,000. He was only 18 and one year later made 6 appearances are Primera, there were great comments on his performance due to his speed and abilities to dribble the opponents. Then the Cantabrians began a downward spiral process that was going to mean straight demotions until ending at Segunda B.

The big year of the Ivorian attacker came for the campaign 2013/14, he netted 18 goals in 30 Segunda B games, plus two in Copa Del Rey, two of them against Primera clubs (Sevilla CF and Real Sociedad). Racing Santander returned to Segunda one year later and Koné had scored 7 goals in 15 league games, but then suffered a serious knee injury that was going to end his season.

The Cantabrian club suffered a new demotion and Koné was loaned to Real Oviedo, place where he coincided with Carmelo Del Pozo. He was able to stay healthy, but didn’t convince with his performance after only scoring five times in 34 appearances.

In 2016, CD Leganés believed in him and ended paying €1 million for him, but he only played 5 games with the Madrilenians in a frame of two years. Between an ankle injury that sidelined him for half a year, and not counting for the coaching staff, he ended at the door out and was loaned to Málaga CF for the past season.

And once again he was unable to shine due to physical problems, by matchday 14 he had already made 6 appearances and had scored goals in straight games against Sporting Gijón and Nástic, but muscle problems were going to sideline him and the attacker returned to compete until the final five matchdays plus the playoff series with Deportivo. Despite the problems, the Andalusians were content with him and it was commented that they wanted him back for the current campaign.

Koné is the sixth signing for Deportivo ahead of the Segunda season 2019/20. The previous reinforcements that joined the club are goalkeeper Koke Vegas, centre-back Vassilios Lampropoulos, winger Borja Galán, plus playmakers Ager Aketxe and Gaku Shibasaki..
