Juanfran Moreno has rescinded his contract with Deportivo, the right-back wasn’t training since Thursday as he was about to sign a 3-year-deal with Turkish club Alanyaspor.

The club informed on Monday that Juanfran Moreno has rescinded his contract with Deportivo, his deal was ending in June of 2020. The right-back will not sign a 3-year-deal with Turkish club Alanyaspor, he wasn’t training since Thursday as he was closing the negotiations with the club.

It was a expected news, first because the club already had four right-back defenders, and secondly because the 30-year-old defender was along the best paid players at the team and the club needed some room in order to fit the salary cap and continue building up the team for the new season.

Juanfran played four straight seasons at Deportivo (138 Primera games with the Galicians), the first three as a loanee from Watford FC (2014-17). It coincided with the last stage of the club at Primera. For the campaign 2014/15, he was the fourth player with more minutes and the second new signing with more participation at the team. Former coach Víctor Fernández liked him for his multifunctional skills as he can perform as a winger and also as a right-back defender.

He was constant in his performance, though also criticized for his lack of aim with the crosses and his poor passing ratio (only 72% that season). With the arrival of Víctor Sánchez, he was used more as a winger as he started to play with a system with four full-back defenders on the field. He completed 24 appearances as a right-back and 10 as a winger.

For the season 2015/16, Juanfran was again a player fulfilling multifunctional tasks, this since he had to perform in three different positions, always without leaving a too convincing impression. The Madrilenian made 35 league appearances, normally acting as a right-back, but also played three times as a left-back and another six as a right winger. An important piece in the defensive puzzle of Víctor Sánchez, though again frequently criticized for his lack of aim with the crosses.

For the campaign 2016/17, he had a more “stable” role, both for his position on the field and for his performance, because he was now playing as a right-back and because the Madrilenian defender left the impression of been improving with the passage of the years. This time it was enough to be one of the most important players at the team. He was the man with more minutes in liga (2,961) and a reference at the right side. Juanfran didn’t score goals this season, but led the department of assists with six (tied with Çolak).

Then Deportivo finally bought his rights, apparently it cost €900,000 and signed a contract lasting until 2020, and it coincided with a very bad season of Depor that meant the relegation to Segunda. Once again, he was the player with more minutes in liga (3,058), but this time offered a disappointing performance, a step backwards compared to past seasons. He continued to have problems in attack, he was often joining the right wing in order to release a cross, but none of his 32 crosses ended in goals. This time he also had big problems defending and his flank was constantly attacked by the rivals.

Been one of the players with higher wages, the club and him decided that the best was a loan spell and he ended at CD Leganés ahead of the season 2018/19. The Madrilenian and Nyom alternated the starting role at the right side of the defence, and he offered and acceptable performance though without shinning.

Deportivo have now released four men that were under contract ahead of the new season. The first one was goalkeeper Francis Uzoho, who was loaned to AC Omonia Nicosia. Later centre midfielder Edu Expósito and striker Quique González were transferred to SD Eibar.
