Victory for Deportivo in a game in which Cartabia and Dani Giménez played for the first time, Borja Valle missed countless chances, but ended scoring the winning goal.

The rival for the friendly game was SD Ponferradina, a newcomer to Segunda División. Coach Juan Antonio Anquela was having the casualties of   Christian Santos, Rolan & David Simón, trio that remained injured, while Gaku Shibasaki and Koné were rested. It was also the first pre-season appearance for Dani Giménez and Fede Cartabia.

Anquela presented a 4-1-4-1- formation and, for the first time on the pre-season, there were no academy players at the starting lineup. Dani Giménez was making his debut as a starter after been rested in the previous three games.

The pace was low within the first minutes; both sides tries to impose themselves through the passing game, but there were no scoring chances within the first ten minutes. The first approximation for Depor came at minute 12, after a secondary play in a corner-kick, Pedro Sánchez released a cross and a defender cleared the ball at the box before reaching the path of Borja Valle. One minute later, Borja Valle attempted a low shot that was deflected by keeper Manu García.

The first chance for SD Ponferradina was a direct free-kick of Óscar Sielva that passed close to the crossbar (18’). Depor should have scored at minute 22, this after stealing the ball at the left of the pitch, three men were unmarked, but the cross of Pedro Sánchez was sent out by Borja Valle.

Three minutes later Lampropoulos headed the ball out in a free-kick action in which he was alone inside the box. Depor were already better at this point in the game, putting a high pressure that was costing mistakes at SD Ponferradina. At minute 28, one of those mistakes provoked a new loose ball at midfield and again Borja Valle attempted a low shot that was blocked by Manu García.

SD Ponferradina had their second chance at minute 30, and again it was a free-kick action, a great shot of Rios Reina was deflected by Dani Giménez.  In the resulting corner-kick, Depor’s goalie made a save again, this time before the short-range header of Russo.

Then Depor could have scored again, a solo-play of Pedro Sánchez on the left ended with a strong shot that was repealed by Manu García, the ball bounced at the goal line and Borja Valle was unable to push it in (34’). SD Ponferradina improved in the final minutes of the first part, and Isi had the chance to score with a low shot from the edge of the area that hit the far post (39’).

There were no changes at the start of the second part. SD Ponferradina started better and Deportivo were unable to step into the rival’s side. There was no passing game and the team was asphyxiated, always searching for long passes without meeting a receiver.

Depor only started to improve at minute 58, it was having longer ball possessions, but everything changed soon as Anquela made three changes, one of them was the entry of Fede Cartabia. The Argentine playmaker brought the balance that the team needed. Only three minutes later the Galicians were awarded with a penalty after Borja Galán was fouled inside the area by Isi, Borja Valle didn’t miss from the spot to score the lonely goal in the meeting.

Depor made seven changes for the final 20 minutes, six of them were lads from the academy. At minute 74, Depor could have scored in a counterattack lead by Cartabia, he made the play on the left and assisted David Sánchez, whose shot was saved at the goal line by substitute keeper Gazzaniga.  Substitute Bolaños had a couple of opportunities in the final minute, but he missed the target. Cartabia had the last chance in the game in a direct free-kick saved by Gazzaniga (90+1’)
