Great display of a Deportivo that was the superior side on the pitch and that even deserved a bigger lead. Anquela presented a lineup that should start against Oviedo and even the lads from Fabril shone within the final minutes.

The final game in the pre-season was the XLIV edition of the Teresa Herrera. Coach Juan Antonio Anquela picked all the available players plus eight lads from Fabril (Bourdal, Mujaid, Viorel Boian, Iago Gandoy, David Sánchez, Valín, Martí Vilà & Javi Sánchez). Two players were out of the meeting: Diego Rolán for injury issues, and Gerard Valentín, for tactical reasons.

Anquela presented a 4-3-3 lineup that should be considered as the expected team to debut in liga. Dani Giménez was the keeper, Bóveda and Caballo covered the sides in defence. Lampropoulos and Somma covered the centre. Álex Bergantiños, Gaku Shibasaki and Borja Galán performed at midfield, the trident in attack was composed by Aketxe, Borja Valle and Koné.

The rival for the game was Real Betis, Primera club that arrived with their big signing Nabil Fekir, striker that cost 22 million euros. Ex-Depor trio Barragán, Sidnei and Guardado were also part of the roster, but only Sidnei was a starter.

The game had a good pace at the start, Depor were having the ball and the first approximation was a cross from the right that Koné couldn’t control (6’). The same Kone had the first big chance to score with a volley from the edge of the area that visiting goalie Joel Robles cleared over the crossbar (9’).

In the next play an error by Betis was close to end in goal, but the cross by Borja Valle was deflected by a defender. The Andalusians were asphyxiated in the output of the ball and Depor were pressing hard and creating plays at the edge of the area that weren’t ending in shots on target.

At minute 16, a cross from Borja Galán couldn’t be headed properly by Koné. In the resulting corner-kick Gaku had a triple chance firing from inside the area, only his last attempt passed the wall of defenders and ended in the arms of Robles.

With the passage of the minutes, Betis were able to break that pressure, but the Verdiblanco team wasn’t creating scoring chances despite the insistence of Canales. Their first attempt was a solo-play of Pedraza that ended with a low shot that was cleared between Dani Giménez and the near post (27’).

Depor responded with a high cross from the left that Borja Valle headed over the crossbar (30’). The same Borja Valle ended the next clear attack of Depor, it was a counterattack on the right that ended with the attacker firing from the edge of the area and Robles made the save (32’).

The first part ended with a Deportivo that were looking brighter, with Borja Galán pretty active on the right wing, and with Koné as he most dangerous player. New signings Ager Aketxe and Gaku Shibasaki also left a positive impression. The last chance in the first half was a direct free-kick of Canales that passed close to the far post (45+1’).

Depor started strong in the second part and Aketxe was close to score in the first play, it was a counterattack in which he unleased a low shot from the edge of the area, the ball hit the ground and Robles cleared the danger (46’).

Then Betis started to push forward and claimed the ball possession. Pedraza had their first chance after collecting a loose ball inside the area, but his shot from the left corner was cleared by the defence (53’). Then Caballo was close to score, he was assisted by Aketxe and his strong shot from long range hit the far post of Robles (55’).

And then Depor met the goal. A collective play between Aketxe and Álex ended with a small deflection of Koné  that left Eneko Bóveda alone against Robles and the right-back scored with a drilling attempt.

Anquela ordered six changes, but Depor continued attacking. One of the two Fabril’s players that entered was David Sánchez and he was close to score in a solo move that was cleared by a defender (64’). In the resulting corner-kick Canales was close to score an own goal.

Depor continued insisting and Borja Galán had the next chance with a low shot that hit a defender and went out (72’). Borja Valle had the next chance with a strong shot from the edge of the area that Robles cleared to corner-kick (76’).

Then Anquela made other four changes, all of them were Fabril’s players, and the locals had a new chance to score. David Sánchez and Javi Sánchez combined, but Christian Santos was unable to connect the ball properly (79’).

Betis started to press within the last minutes and substitute Tello had a good chance that was saved by Dani Giménez (82’). But Depor ended the game attacking and having the last chance to score. At minute 88, a long play started by Iago Gandoy and Vicente Gómez ended with a shot of Christian Santos that went over the crossbar.
