REVIEW: HUESCA 3 – DEPORTIVO 1 (LIGA)

26 Aug 2019
First defeat for Deportivo in the league season, terrible game for a team without ideas in attack and weak in defence.

BEFORE THE GAME
Two novelties compared to the debut in liga; Caballo was left on the bench and Luis Ruiz made his official debut, while Pedro Sánchez returned from suspension and claimed a spot in attack. Peru Nolaskoain was a last-minute casualty, because he needed surgery due to appendicitis.

Dani Giménez covered the goal, Eneko Bóveda played at the right side in defence, Luis Ruiz performed on the left, the centre-backs were Michele Somma and Vassilios Lampropoulos. Álex Bergantiños and Gaku Shibasaki performed at midfield, Borja Valle attacked from the right wing, Pedro Sánchez did it from the left, Ager Aketxe was the playmaker and Mamadou Koné was the striker.

At SD Huesca, Eugeni Valderrama was a starter leaving Juan Carlos Real on the bench. The only two ex-Depor players that were starters were Pedro Mosquera and Luisinho. Dani Raba and Dani Escriché were the references in attack.

FIRST HALF
It was a bad first half for Deportivo, the Galicians had big problems in defence, mainly in the left side defended by Luis Ruiz. And in attack only the isolated plays of Koné gave problems to a defensive line that didn’t face too much problems.

The game started with SD Huesca having the ball and putting pressure in attack. The first shot on target came at minute 6, it was an attempt of Raba that was an easy catch for Dani Giménez (6’). Depor’s first approximation was a solo-play of Kone that went wide (9’).

The first big chance to score came at minute 11, it was a secondary play after a lateral free-kick, Raba collected the ball at the far post and his strong shot hit the knee of Kike Hermoso and went over the crossbar.

SD Huesca were giving a lot of problems on the sides, Pedro López and Raba were surpassing Bóveda and Luis Ruiz, mainly the latter, so Depor looked uncomfortable and to make things worse there wasn’t any presence in attack, just the long throws searching for Koné.

At minute 21, Aketxe released a lateral free-kick and Koné scored heading the ball in, but it was disallowed by the referee due to an offside. The VAR determined that the decision was right as a Depor’s player deflected the ball at the near post and Koné was offside at the moment of connecting the ball.

And then SD Huesca scored, Gaku earned the ball at the left side of Depor’s area, he tried to clear it, but it hit Luis Ruiz, Dani Escriché collected the rebound and released a short cross that Eugeni Valderama found at the penalty spot to send the ball in.

Deportivo didn’t react and the locals were close to score the second, it was a lateral free-kick of Mosquera in which he assisted Luisinho, and his strong shot went over the crossbar (30’). Koné had the second chance for Depor, he collected a high ball after a rebound, but his effort went close to the near post (32’).

The Ivorian had a new chance eight minutes later, this time he collected a cross from Borja Valle, then he dribbled three rivals, but his effort just went close to the near post.  During the stoppage time both sides had a chance to score. First it was Depor, Gaku collected the ball after a corner-kick, his attempt hit a rival and then the ball was caught by local goalie Álvaro Fernández (45+2’). And in the next play, the locals scored the second. A high volley in a free-kick at midfield ended in two rebounds, it was later collected by Raba, who scored with an impressive volley from the edge of the area.

SECOND HALF
The final part only confirmed the bad impression left by Depor in the first half; the third goal arrived soon and Anquela made the changes after been trailing 3-0. There was a reaction, but it only lasted enough to bring a goal.

Things didn’t change for the second half; SD Huesca were having a better control of the ball and Depor looked erratic. So, it wasn’t a surprise to see the third goal arriving, and again it was a big error in the output of the ball.

Somma failed with a long pass, then the Aragonians made a quick and collective play with seven passes that ended with Rico drilling the ball to Jorge Pulido, who just had to push the ball in from close range. That play uncovered the big problems at the defence, because all the players were out of position and the outcome was to have a big hole at the centre of the field.

It was only then that Anquela made the changes. He sent Longo and Christian Santos for Pedro Sánchez and Borja Valle. The big score only gave confidence to SD Huesca, the locals didn’t have any hurry and tried to have the ball, while Depor were lost in the battle against themselves.

The team missed a lot of passes and wasn’t creating any danger.  To make things worse, Somma picked an injury [knee knock] and Vicente Gómez had to replace him. The Canarian was helping in defence, but basically Depor played with a 3-5-2 figure.

And Christian Santos was going to pull a goal for Depor; a long play for the Galicians ended with Gaku assisting the Venezuelan attacker, who later scored with a drilling and crossed shot past Álvaro Fernández.

The goal gave some impulse to Depor, at minute 76, Christian Santos missed the target after firing from the edge of the area (76’).  But the Galicians lost that impulse within the last ten minutes and SD Huesca didn’t suffer to secure their second victory in the campaign

Actually, they could have extended the lead during the added time. First substitute Sergio Gómez could have scored with a low shot saved by Dani Giménez (90+1’), one minute later David Ferreiro connected a cross from the left, the ball hit the post and then the back of Dani Giménez and went out.

AFTER THE GAME
Terrible game for Deportivo. The Galicians simply didn’t show anything at El Alcoraz. The defense was soft and there were no ideas in attack. A lot of errors in the output of the ball, two of them cost goals. Only a couple of runs by Koné and a new goal for Christian Santos can be saved from this presentation.

Deportivo have now lost it’s first game in the Segunda season. The next meeting is also taking place on the road as the Galicians visit Rayo Vallecano (Estadio de Vallecas, Sunday, 18h00 CET).
