REVIEW: GIRONA 3 – DEPORTIVO 1 (LIGA)

04 Oct 2019
Another terrible first part for Deportivo, a slight improvement in the second half, only to go down again after committing a new defensive error. The team remains in relegation.

BEFORE THE GAME
Coach Juan Antonio Anquela presented a 4-2-3-1 formation with Saša Jovanović, Peru Nolaskoain and Samuele Longo appearing as starters. Beto da Silva was left out of the game as nineteen players were picked for the trip to Catalonia.

Dani Giménez was the starting goalie, Eneko Bóveda covered the right side in defence, the left flank was for Salva Ruiz, Vassilios Lampropoulos and Javi Montero covered the central positions. Álex Bergantiños joined Nolaskoain at midfield, Víctor Mollejo attacked from the left wing, Jovanović did it from the right, Ager Axetxe was the playmaker and Longo the centre forward.

At Girona FC, coach Juan Carlos Unzué presented a 4-1-4-1 formation with Cristhian Stuani as the reference in attack.  Pedro Alcalá was playing at the centre of the defence, while Marc Gual and Gerard Gumbau were also starters.

FIRST HALF
Another terrible first half for Deportivo. The Galicians tried to play with the pressure, but failed miserably and allowed the attacks from Girona FC. Meanwhile, the Galician outfit was simple inexistent in attack, unable to complete any shot or even generate a corner-.kick.

The game started with a lateral free-kick of Aketxe that didn’t find a receiver inside the area (3’), in the counterattack Marc Gual missed the target firing from the edge of the area. Depor were trying to press in attack, but Girona didn’t have problems to surpass this pressure and later was damaging through the counterattack.

The locals had a couple of approximations through crosses that Juanpe headed out (6’ & 8’). At this early point in the half Depor started to lose the order and Girona FC claimed control of the ball. At minute 11, a cross from Jozabed was connected by Borja García and he sent the ball into the path of Dani Giménez.

Cristhian Stuani appeared for the first time at minute 16, Borja García released a cross that the Uruguayan sent out. Two minutes later the same player collected the ball at the edge of the area and again he missed the target.

So, it wasn’t a surprise when the first goal of Girona FC arrived. Peru Nolaskoain committed a big error passing the ball, then Stuani ran towards the area and released a shot that hit the  post and Borja García was there to push the loose ball in.

There was no reaction from Depor; actually, Girona FC were closer to increase the lead. At minute 33, Stuani released a crossed shot that was deflected by Lampropoulos. The Galicians were dead in attack, Jovanović and Mollejo exchanged positions, but it didn’t help to their cause.

Then the second goal arrived, and again it was a big distraction of the defence. A lateral free-kick of Granel was connected by Alcalá and Marc Gual met the ball at the far post and scored without any pressure.

Girona FC could have even scored a third goal before the break, this after Aday Benitez met the ball at the far post in a corner-kick action, but Dani Giménez deflected his volley (44’).

SECOND HALF
It was impossible to have a worst performance than in the first half, so there was an improvement in the second. Borja Valle scored and there was some hope, but a new defensive error cost the third goal and the game.

The second part started without fresh news, Depor were losing the ball in offensive positions and Girona FC felt comfortable in the counterattack. The first shot of Deportivo in the game came until minute 53, it was a free-kick of Aketxe that went over the crossbar.

Three minutes later, Longo assisted Jovanović inside the area, but his shot was blocked by Johan Mojica. At minute 57, a cross from Bóveda was headed by Mollejo, but it was an easy catch for local goalie Juan Carlos Martín.

It seemed that Depor were going to react after these actions, but GironaFC started to grow in the game. Stuani had his next chance at minute 63, Aday released a cross from the right and the Uruguayan headed the ball at the far post and it went out.

Then Borja Valle replaced Jovanović. The Serbian had an unimpressive game, been caught four times in offside and without creating any chance to score. And Valle gave a goal after a few minutes on the pitch; he released a precise shot into the post after been assisted by Javi Montero.

Depor gained some hope and started to have arrivals. At minute 72, Longo missed the target firing from the edge of the area. Anquela decided to pull the Italian out of the game, and Christian Santos claimed his spot.

The game turned into an exchange of blows in the final frame. At minute 77, a lateral free-kick of Aketxe was barely deflected by Juan Carlos. In the resulting corner-kick, the locals released a counterattack in which they couldn’t t end a two-on-one play. And the blade was going to fall in favour of the locals. Lampropoulos missed a pass at midfield and the counterattack allowed Samu Saiz, who just entered the field seconds before, to assist Stuani and the Uruguayan scored with a crossed shot.

Vicente entered for Montero and Nolaskoain ended performing as a centre-back. Deportivo tried to do something more in the added time, first a shot of Salva Ruiz was saved by Juan Carlos (90+1’), in the next play Bóveda missed the target from inside the area. Then the final play was a volley of Mollejo that went close to the crossbar (90+3’).

AFTER THE GAME
New game and same old face by Deportivo. The Galicians had a new terrible first half, it came out to the second part with a two-goal deficit, then there was some hope with the goal of Borja Valle, but a new defensive error cost the third goal and the fourth defeat on the season.

Deportivo remain in relegation, now at the penultimate place. Anquela won’t be fired as the next game is played on Sunday, but the Andalusian man could be axed if Depor show a new poor impression hosting UD Almeria (Sunday, 18h30 CET).
