NOTES FROM THE GAME AT UD LAS PALMAS

15 Oct 2019
Depor have reached the bottom of Segunda for the first time in 36 years, it played one of the worst games of the season, and all of this in the debut of Luis César.

The five notes from the game at UD Las Palmas:

1- New coach, same story: It was known that it was going to be difficult to see a drastic change, after all Luis César arrived at the beginning of the week and there were eight casualties that affected the planning for the game, but at least a change of attitude was expected, and in the end Depor ended even playing worse than with Anquela. Because apart from the defeat with SD Huesca, Anquela’s Depor committed huge mistakes and was always early trailing in the games, but at least there was always a reaction. In this opportunity not even that and the Galicians ended the game completing only one shot on target.

2- A team without a game plan: The current moment of Deportivo and UD Las Palmas was clearly marked on the pitch. The Canarians had a plan, which was to have a solid presence at midfield, put pressure at midfield, not risk the ball and search for the transversal moves of Pedri and Jonathan Viera, and a couple of passes from Pedri were the only thing needed to slash Deportivo. Meanwhile, the Galicians never knew what to do, they didn’t have any clue about how to overcome the first lane of pressure from the rival and constantly looked ineffective passing the ball (only 71% in pass accuracy), and only the set-pieces of Aketxe brought problems to debutant Álvaro Valles.

3- Bad debut for Luis César: The 0-3 loss at Estadio de Gran Canaria meant to be the worst debut for a Depor coach since Cristobal Parralo, curiously the latter replaced Pepe Mel and his first game was against UD Las Palmas at the Riazor for Copa del Rey, and it was a 1-4 loss (October 26, 2017).

4- Debut for Jorge Valín: Right-back Jorge Valín is the fourth Fabril’s players that debuts this season (the other 3 were Mujaid, David Sánchez and Iago Gandoy). It’s hard to emphasize any quality of any player after losing 0-3, especially since the 19-year-old had to deal with Pedri, but the important thing is that he seemed fine and capable of playing in this league, he made 34 passes (pass accuracy 77%).

5- The bottom club at Segunda: Depor have now spent ten matchdays without a victory and is now the bottom club at Segunda División. The Galicians are tied in points with Málaga, but have a worse goal difference. It’s the first time that Depor is the last place in the second tier since 1983, at the time Arsenio Iglesias’ Depor started the campaign 1983/84 with one draw and three defeats and was the bottom club at matchday 4 (September 25, 1983).
