New miseries for a Deportivo that didn’t play a bad game, but that committed the usual errors to end losing again. The nightmare continues.

Coach Luis César Sampedro surprised as Mujaid Sadick was the chosen one in order to cover the right-back position. It also called the attention that Samuele Longo, who was a starter in the previous six games, was not even on the bench for the meeting.

The coach presented a 4-2-3-1 formation, with Dani Giménez at the goal, Mujaid covered the right side in defence, the left flank was for Salva Ruiz, while Vassilios Lampropoulos and Jani Montero played at the central position. Midfield was territory for Álex Bergantiños and Peru Nolaskoain. Saša Jovanović attacked from the right wing, Víctor Mollejo did it from the left and Mamadou Koné was the centre forward.

At Elche CF, coach José Rojo ‘Pacheta’ allowed the return of centre-back Juan Cruz, who was playing at the left side of the defence. The reference in attack was the trident of Nino, Yacine Qasmi and Fidel Chaves.

It was a decent first half for Deportivo in an almost empty Riazor, the Galicians were trailing, but didn’t play a bad game and find the way to equalize. Later the game turned to be more equal with some sporadic opportunities for both sides.

The game started with a Depor that was trying to have the initiative, and their first opportunity was a free-kick of Aketxe with visiting goalie Edgard Badía making the save (7’). Elche CF replied with a solo-move of Nino that ended with a cross deflected by Lampropoulos (10’).

Depor were looking better, but it ended conceded the first goal anyway. And it i was after a free-kick in a foul committed by Álex Bergantiños at the edge of the area. Gonzalo Verdú took the ball and his shot was deflected and later Dani Giménez was unable to make the save.

The locals started to lose the impulse of the first minutes and Elche CF could have scored the second goal, it was a corner-kick of Josan in which Manu Sánchez headed the ball out (23). But then Depor find the equalizer.

Javi Montero made the play from the defense, he drilled a pass to Salva Ruiz, who later released a cross from the left that, after a deflection at the box, Víctor Mollejo met to score from close range. The goal motivated Deportivo and Nolaskoain was close to score with a shot that passed close to the post (29’).

But the game changed and Elche CF started to improve, the Valencians ended the half in better shape and could have scored the second at the edge of half-time. Josan made the play on the left, his cross was deflected by Salva Ruiz and substitute Claudio Medina met the ball at the box and his crossing header went out close to the far post (44’).

Not a bad performance in the second part for Deportivo, the team didn’t find the same criterion with the penalties of past games, and later it was unable to react when the defensive errors appeared, two goals that arrived when the team was trying.

The final part started with a good chance for Depor, after only 39 seconds, Koné was about to seize a bad deflection from a defender, but Edgard Badía arrived first to contain the ball. Later there was a possible penalty after a cross from Salva Ruiz, the ball hit the arm of a defender, but no VAR revision was made (48’). It was a similar play to the penalty whistled to Albacete and that cost a defeat.

And from a possible penalty for the locals, the game passed to a penalty for the visiting side. Nino released a low shot from the edge of the area, Dani Giménez couldn’t contain the ball and the loose ball was disputed between the keeper and Medina and the Vigo-born goalie committed  a penalty that Fidel Chaves seized from the spot.

Luis César made the first substitution and Borja Valle replaced Saša Jovanović. Depor tried to push, it lacked ideas to create scoring opportunities, but at least it was passing the ball at the visiting side of the pitch.

The second substitution was the entry of Christian Santos for Álex Bergantiños.  Depor were having big problems to attack, but Los Blanquiazules could have scored the equalizer at minute 73. Salva Ruiz released a high cross from the left and Mollejo headed the ball at the box with Badia making a big save.

The last substitution at Depor was the entry of Borja Galán for Mujaid. The locals tried, but it lacked ideas to create anything, just a volley of Koné (83’), and to make things worse Elche CF found a third goal in a big error of Aketxe, he made a bad pass at midfield and Elche CF released a deadly counterattack, Nino fired a strong that Dani Giménez could barely deflect, the loose ball was found by substitute Pere Milla, who crossed the ball for the final blow.

The third goal just unleased the fury of the Riazor and new whistles were hear against the board and Carmelo del Pozo. Depor were defeated, though Borja Valle could have scored after collecting a rebound at the edge of the area, but his strong shot just went close to the near post (90+1’).

No peace of mind for a Deportivo that didn’t play bad, but that lost again as it was unable to counteract the big defensive errors that cost the goals. The team showed the same lack of ideas, though the players tried without finding any luck at the rival’s area.

Time is ticking out and Deportivo remain at the bottom of the standings, the first round is about to end and the Galicians continue to live a nightmare. The next game is the visit to Extremadura UD (Saturday, 16h00 CET).
