PREVIEW: CD LUGO – DEPORTIVO (LIGA)

01 Dec 2019
Deportivo search for the second victory in the season with Luis César repeating the 4-3-3 system from last week. It is a Galician derby with the rival trying to define a spot in professional football.

Referee: José Antonio López Toca
VAR Official: Jon Ander González Esteban
Kick-off: 18h00 CET (Anxo Carro)

STATISTICS: THE DERBIES FOR CD LUGO
CD Lugo have a solid record facing other Galician teams in league competitions, because of their last 20 meetings against rival from Galicia they only lost once (0-2 Vs. Coruxo FC), the rest were twelve victories and seven draws. And Deportivo haven’t been able to defeat CD Lugo, this after three draws and the defeat of last season at the Anxo Carro.

Meanwhile, Deportivo are about to tie their worst mark ever after spending 16 games without winning; if they don’t add the three points at the Anxo Carro, then Los Blanquiazules will tie the mark from the campaign 1987/88.

The record of CD Lugo at the Anxo Carro during this campaign is acceptable after adding 12 points in 9 home meetings, but they have been conceding a lot lately. Because, within their last 6 home games, they have allowed 11 goals, which is the worst mark in the league, even Depor allowed less (9).

DEPORTIVO: REPEATING THE SYSTEM
After a month and a half searching for a playing style, it seems that coach Luis César Sampedro has finally found a system, the 4-3-3. The players have stated during the week, that despite not adding the victory against AD Alcorcón, they felt comfortable with the system and are willing to use it again.

But the fact of using the same system doesn’t mean that the coach will repeat the lineup. Throughout the week Luis César has tested with Ager Aketxe performing as the centre forward, which means that Samuele Longo would start on the bench.

Team news: Saša Jovanović, David Simón and Salva Ruiz are the players at the injury room. Luis César picked all the available players for the game, which means that Borja Galan and Borja Valle are back after skipping the last game. Fabril’s Mujaid Sadick is in and should keep playing at the right side of the defence.

Man to watch: Playmaker Vicente Gómez. After months in the shadows, Vicente had an acceptable game against AD Alcorcón, and Depor need a guide at midfield after been suffering from lack of ideas at the moment of creating scoring opportunities, a problem that the team is dragging from last season. If Depor want to find the goal, it needs ideas in the trivote at midfield and the Canarian is the main candidate for the job.

Picked players: (20) Dani Giménez, Koke Vegas (goalkeepers); Eneko Bóveda, Michelle Somma, Javi Montero, Vassilios Lampropoulos, Mujaid Sadick, Luiz Ruiz (defenders); Álex Bergantiños, Peru Nolaskoain, Vicente Gómez, Gaku Shibasaki, Ager Aketxe, Borja Galán, Víctor Mollejo (midfielders); Christian Santos, Mamadou Koné, Borja Valle, Beto da Silva & Samuele Longo (attackers)

Predicted lineup: (4-3-3) Dani Giménez – Mujaid, Lampropoulos, Somma, Luis Ruiz – Nolaskoain, Álex Bergantiños, Vicente Gómez – Mollejo, Aketxe, Koné.

CD LUGO: THE NEXT STEP
This is the eighth straight season of CD Lugo at Segunda División, the club seems to have found stability in the league and already plans the next step. President Tino Saqués is trying to build up a sporting city and negotiates with the city council improvements to the Anxo Carro, at the same time the spot at Segunda is tempting for other investors and throughout 2019 the club has been linked with a possible sell, the latter is a rumor of the possible arrival of a Mexican group, though Saqués has always denied any contact with an outsider.

But this stability doesn’t mean that the fans are happy. Actually, they are upset with Saqués and many times have requested his exit from the club. The poor results of the last two seasons, plus the continuous changes at the bench and the sporting direction have created doubts about the management. The latest confrontation came with the high prices set for the game with Deportivo, and the fact that the season subscribers have to pay to watch the game, just like the major part of the clubs do when they face FC Barcelona or Real Madrid.

Team news: It’s expected that coach Eloy Jiménez is going to repeat the lineup that gave a hard battle to Cádiz CF. There are two casualties for injury reasons: right-back defender Gerard Valentín (muscle) and midfielder Hugo Rama (knee).

Man to watch: Winger Cristian Herrera. CD Lugo don’t have a reference in attack as coach Eloy has been switching between Manu Barreiro and Tete Morente, and the unexpected top-scorer has turned to be Cristian Herrera, who has been one of the most regular player at the team though 4 of his 6 goals arrived within the first six matches. It will be a challenge for Mujaid to defend him.

Picked players: Roster to be released on Sunday.

Predicted lineup: (5-4-1) Ander Cantero – Campabadal, Djalo, Peybernes, Josete, Lebedenko – Iriome, Carlos Pita, Álex López, Cristian Herrera – Tete Morente.
