PREVIEW: SD PONFERRADINA – DEPORTIVO (LIGA)

14 Dec 2019
The crisis of Deportivo continues, the last away game of the season facing a rival that has only lost once at home during the current campaign.

Referee: Miguel Ángel Ortíz Arias
VAR Official: Daniel Jesús Trujillo Suárez
Kick-off: 18h00 CET (Toralín)

STATISTICS: STRONG AT HOME
SD Ponferradina is a team that suffers a drastic change depending if they are playing at the Toralín stadium or not. And it’s that they have added ten more points at home than on the road (17 v 7). That’s the third biggest difference in the league only behind Girona FC (15) and SD Huesca (12).

Los Bercianos are the seventh best local team in the league after adding 17 points in 10 home meetings. They have only lost once at the Toralín during this season, and it was against UD Las Palmas (0-2, October 2).

Meanwhile, little more can be said about the terrible season of Deportivo. The Galicians are at the bottom of every statistical department in the league and will end 2019 in relegation, and it’s probable that they will end the year at the bottom of the standings. The only way to avoid it is to win the last two games in 2019 and to see either Racing Santander or Extremadura UD losing twice.

DEPORTIVO: UNCERTAINTY
The environment in A Coruña is of total uncertainty, not only for the situation with the board of directors, but for the lack of arguments to defend a team that already spent 19 matchdays without winning. Now the coach is under fire. Luis César Sampedro spent the previous two weeks saying that he was content with his defence after clinching straight clean sheets. But everything was broken in the last game after conceding three goals against Real Zaragoza.

The true is that Luis César is now questioned. He just broke the mark of Clarence Seedorf of more games without winning in a debut with Depor (9). It was commented that on Monday the board studied his exit, in the end they decided to quit, but it doesn’t mean that the coach won’t be fired in he doesn’t achieve victories in the two games in liga that will close the year.

Team news: Borja Valle and Gaku Shibasaki are joining David Simón at the injury room. The surprise was that both Samuele Longo and Ager Aketxe weren’t picked for the game. Salva Ruiz was available after surpassing an injury, but the coach decided to give him more time. Iago Gandoy from Fabril was picked in order to complete the roster.

Man to watch: Winger Víctor Mollejo. The most reliable attacker on the season, and also the youngest player at the squad. Once again his sparkles might start the engine of a Deportivo that need points.

Picked players: (18) Dani Giménez, Koke Vegas (goalkeepers); Eneko Bóveda, Michelle Somma, Javi Montero, Vassilios Lampropoulos, Mujaid Sadick, Luiz Ruiz (defenders); Álex Bergantiños, Peru Nolaskoain, Vicente Gómez, Iago Gandoy, Borja Galán, Saša Jovanović, Víctor Mollejo (midfielders); Mamadou Koné, Christian Santos & Beto da Silva (attackers)

Predicted lineup: (4-3-3) Dani Giménez – Mujaid, Lampropoulos, Somma, Luis Ruiz – Nolaskoain, Álex Bergantiños, Vicente Gómez – Saša Jovanović , Koné, Mollejo.

PONFERRADINA: STABILITY
All that SD Ponferradina wanted at the start of the season was some stability, and that’s what they are getting. After spending four straight years at Segunda between 2012 and 2016, which is their longest run at the second tier, this club suffered a demotion and spent three years at Segunda B.

Now they are back and are finding stability. After losing in the opening matchday at Cádiz CF (3-1), the team coached by Bolo spent six matchdays without defeats, then lost two straight games and chained a new undefeated streak (7 games), now they are again in a little bump after losing two of their last three games, but their season is going well and without major problems. For this reason coach Jon Pérez Bolo was renewed this week.

Team news: Centre midfielders Óscar Sielva and Fran Manzanara are suspended for the game.  But Bolo recovers midfielder Carlos Bravo and striker Yuri should be available after not training with the group during the week.

Man to watch: Striker Yuri de Souza. This veteran player is still rocking in Spanish football. He is 37 and is the fifth best scorer in the league with 9 goals in 19 presentations. And 6 of those goals came in his last 9 appearances in the tournament.

Picked players: Roster to be released on Saturday

Predicted lineup: (4-4-2) Caro – Son, Pablo Trigueros, Russo, Ríos – Isi, Saúl Crespo, Pablo Larrea, Valcarce – Yuri, Asier Benito.
