REVIEW: DEPOR LADIES 7 – VALENCIA 2 (COPA)

12 Feb 2020
Big match for Peke and Athenea, who demolished a poor Valencia CF in defensive tasks. The game was entertaining as both teams always sought for the opposite goal.

BEFORE THE GAME
While Valencia CF were making rotations, coach Manu Sánchez barely made touched the team that lost facing Athletic Club. Keeper María Isabel Rodríguez ‘Misa’ was recovered from an injury, but started on the bench.  The only change was to see Colombian Lorena Bedoya at the starting formation, the centre-back was making her debut with the team.

THE MATCH
Deportivo advanced to quarterfinals in Copa de la Reina after an entertaining game at the Riazor. The score was big, but Valencia CF were close to tie the actions in two different moments. In the end the Galicians won thanks to their punch, led by the great performance of Ainize Barea ‘Peke’ and Athenea del Castillo.

The game started with a goal from Deportivo. It was a counterattack with Peke entering by the left, then she attempted a cross/shot that was going into the path of visiting goalie María Pi, but Athenea Del Castillo arrived first and scored from the box.

Valencia CF tried to respond and Carol was close to complete a counterattack in which she met keeper Sullastres and María Méndez, and they cleared the danger (8’). Then Cris attempted a long-range shot that missed the target (10’).

And then the second goal arrived. Athenea started the play at midfield, he ran and drilled a perfect pass that Gaby didn’t touch and it reached the path of Peke, who dribbled a rival before scoring from close range.

Then Valencia CF pulled a goal, it was an error in the output of the ball in which Calligaris tried to shot on target from inside the area, but the ball was deflected and it only found Paula Guerrero, who pushed the ball in firing from the far post.

The goal awoke Valencia CF, the visiting team started to push and Depor Ladies had problems in the output of the ball. But then the locals regained control of the actions, and Gaby was close to score after not connecting properly a cross in a lateral free-kick (26’). Van den Berg responded for Valencia CF in a lateral free-kick that Sullatres cleared with the fists (29’).

And Depor Ladies found the third goal, and again thanks to the connection Athenea Del Castillo-Peke. It was a big play of Athenea on the left, she dribbled two rivals and released a low cross that was met by Peke, the first contact of the striker hit a defender, but later she was faster to connect the ball in past Maria Pi.

The first half ended with a Depor Ladies that was closer to score the fourth goal, Athenea, Tere and Gaby were finding the cracks at the visiting defence and only failed at the moment of giving the last pass.

The second part started with a goal for Valencia CF. A perfectly timed cross of Calligaris was headed at the far post by Mari Paz. Once again the Valencians were down only by a goal and once again they started to push.

But Depor Ladies extended the lead again, Alba Merino fought hard for the ball at the left flank, Athenea ran with it and released a low cross that Peke converted for her third on the night. The game continued to be open and the third goal for the visiting team could have arrived one minute later, but María Méndez saved a ball that hit the crossbar later (60’).

The first substitution at Depor was the entry of Maya Yamamoto for Alba Merino, and then the fifth goal arrived, and again in a combination between Athenea and Peke, the first entered the area with the ball and assisted Peke, who fired twice from close range after her first attempt was blocked.

And the party continued, Mari Paz was close to score through a strong shot saved by Sullastres (72’), and in the next play a long run of Peke was blocked when she entered the area. Then substitute Zenatha Coleman was close to score in a counterattack in which he missed the target after beating the mark of Cris (78’).

Noelia Villegas was the second substitution entering for Nuria Rabano and the sixth goal arrived, this time with Gaby drilling a pass to Tere Abelleira, who didn’t miss from close range.

Kika and Carolina Arbeláez were the last substitutions made at the local team and there was time for the seventh goal. It came in the added time after a short corner-kick, Maya released a drilling cross from the right that no one cleared and María Méndezpushed the ball in from the far post.
