DEPOR LADIES 2019/20: A DREAM AMIDST THE NIGHTMARE

16 May 2020
A fourth place in its first season at the elite, the female team of Deportivo had an explosive debut that deserved a better recognition.

Depor Ladies made history during the season 2019/20, the team debuted at the elite and broke all the polls by ending fourth at the standings after a remarkable performance. The team won 11 of the 21 games that were played and only lost 6 times in liga plus once in Copa de La Reina. It added 37 points and only ended below both giants FC Barcelona, Atlético Madrid, plus Levante UD.

And to remember that the expectations were low at the start of the season. The team was mainly composed by U-23 players with little experience at Liga Iberdrola, and the feeling that the only goal was to fight for the permanence was evident after the big loss in the Teresa Herrera facing UDG Tenerife (1-5).

But the team managed to have the best of the starts after winning six of the first seven games. The ladies clinched victories over RCD Espanyol (3-1), Betis Féminas (3-4), Athletic Club (0-2), Rayo Vallecano (3-0), Sporting Huelva (0-1) and CD Tacón (3-1). The only team that managed to add a point against Depor Ladies was precisely UDG Tenerife, the executioner of the Teresa Herrera, this in 1-1 draw at Abegondo.

Then the big exam arrived as Depor Ladies had to visit both giant teams, and it ended in big losses: 4-1 at Atlético Madrid and 6-1 at FC Barcelona. The team bounced back with a 2-1 win over Sevilla FC, but the true is that the gals had reached the lowest point of the season after spending four games without winning.

They lost for the third time in the campaign visiting Levante UD (1-0), and later chained three straight draws: Madrid CFF (2-2), Real Sociedad (3-3) and Valencia CF (1-1). The game with Real Sociedad was extremely painful as the ladies had the advantage in three different moments until allowing the final equalizer at minute 85.

Then Depor Ladies lived a period of ups and downs, it started the second round with victories over RCD Espanyol (0-3) and Betis Féminas ((3-1), but later lost visiting UDG Tenerife (5-3) and hosting Athletic Club (0-2), this was the lonely home defeat on the campaign.

Then the team bounced back and achieved three straight victories to end a season that had to be suspended due to the COVID-19 crisis: Rayo Vallecano (2-1), Sporting Huelva (5-1) and CD Tacón (3-4). The last game played was one that resounded across Spain. Depor Ladies were visiting the future Real Madrid and were losing 3-0 by minute 82, only to score four goals in a frame of 9 minutes.

The team also had a remarkable performance in Copa Del Rey. In February the ladies demolished Valencia CF in what turned to be their biggest win of the season: 7-2. And at the end of that month they were eliminated in the quarterfinals visiting FC Barcelona (1-0). The goal came at minute 119 with the tie was about to be decided in the penalty shoutout.  The same Catalans admitted that that was their toughest game of the season.

In resume, Depor Ladies was the only team that brought joy to the fans during the season 2019/20, at least until the pandemic started. And it was a pity that the campaign had to be cut out when the team was having good results and more importantly, without the chance to say goodbye on the pitch.
