REVIEW: TENERIFE 1 - DEPORTIVO 1 (LIGA)

01 Jul 2020
Deportivo deserved the victory, but it had to wait until the injury time in order to rescue a point after a polemic penalty of Mujaid.

BEFORE THE GAME
Fernando Vázquez decided to play with a 5-4-1 draw, scheme that meant offensive game on the sides, he made five modifications compared to the game that defeated SD Ponferradina three days before, in the end Abdoulaye Ba was a substitute as Eneko Bóveda performed as a centre-back.

Dani Giménez was the starting goalie, David Simón covered the right side in defence, the left flank was for Salva Ruiz. Álex Bergantiños and Mujaid Sadick joined Bóveda at the central positions. Gaku Shibasaki and Uche Agbo performed at midfield. Hugo Vallejo attacked from the right wing, Víctor Mollejo did it from the left, then Sabin Merino was the centre forward.

At CD Tenerife, Rubén Baraja didn’t make rotations despite his team only rested three days for this match. The only two modifications compared to the past game were the presences of Alex Bermejo and Joselu. Dani Gómez was the other reference in attack.

FIRST HALF
The first part was exciting at the start and became more paused at the end. Depor had its opportunities, and also problems to defend the game from the second line. Uche Agbo had to be replaced due to an injury.

The game had an electric start, in the first play of the game, a lateral free-kick for the locals ended with a shot of Aitor Sanz that was deflected by Dani Giménez. Deportivo responded with a counterattack in which David Simón ran 20 meters, entered the area and fired a strong and crossed shot that was deflected by local goalie Adrián Ortolá (3’).

At minute 9, a distraction in the local defence allowed Mollejo to attempt a crossed shot that was deflected. Two minutes later, Dani Gómez collected a high cross inside the area, but his shot was too soft for Depor’s goalkeeper.

Then Deportivo started to have mismatches marking players coming from the second line, and CD Tenerife was finding the opportunity to shot from the edge of the area, though the attempts of Luis Milla and Dani Gómez ended in nothing.

The game reached a break as both teams suffered an injury case. Dani Gómez had to leave the pitch and was replaced by Ramón Miérez. At Deportivo, Uche Agbo suffered a tough tackle at midfield and had to be replaced by Borja Valle. The club reported that the Nigerian midfielder suffered a knee contusion.

All the excitement of the beginning was gone for the final stretch of the game, the only opportunities in this frame was a cross of Hugo Vallejo that Sabin Merino was unable to connect when he was at the box (41’), and then a combination between  Vallejo and Merino that ended in a pinball that was caught by Ortolá (45’).

SECOND HALF
The second half witnessed the best Deportivo post-lockdown, the Galicians overwhelmed the rival with countless corner-kicks, but they were about to lose the game if it wasn’t for the wonderful strike of Aketxe.

The final part started with a couple of opportunities for Deportivo. First, Gaku fired a low shot from the edge of the area, the ball hit the ground and Ortolá barely deflected the ball. In the resulting corner-kick, Mollejo headed the ball over the crossbar after a cross from David Simón.

Then Deportivo increased the pressure and had three corner-kicks, in one of them Sabin Merino was about to score after an acrobatic attempt that was saved by Ortolá (51’). The Galicians continued having chances in corner-kicks, but the ball chance wasn’t entering, then Aketxe replaced Hugo Vallejo.

At minute 59, a new corner-kick allowed Aketxe to release a clinical cross, but Merino cleared the ball instead of scoring from the far post.  Then the tide changed and CD Tenerife started to improve, and Vázquez made two changes with Emre Çolak and Christian Santos entering for Mollejo and Merino.

Christian Santos could have scored at minute 73, he collected a drilling cross from Salva Ruiz and Ortolá made the save with a leg. Depor were caressing the victory, but then the polemic call of the game came as the referee whistled a very doubtful penalty of Mujaid when he jumped before Joselu at the edge of the area, the referee whistled the penalty and didn’t consult the VAR, and Luis Milla converted from the spot.

Deportivo saw how the game was escaping from its hands, and as it has happened since the lockdown, the Galicians found the way to rescue a point in the added time. A long play in attack couldn’t be cleared by Tenerife’s defence, Bóveda released a drilling cross from the left, there was a deflection and the ball reached the path of Ager Aketxe, who scored the equalizer with a rocket past Ortolá.

AFTER THE GAME
Again Deportivo had to wait for the injury time in order to change the sign of the outcome. But this time the Galicians were better than the rival, especially in the second half. A polemic penalty of Mujaid was neutralized by a great strike by Aketxe.

Deportivo will remain living outside the relegation zone and remain undefeated after the pause. The next game is the visit of SD Huesca to the Riazor (Sunday, 17h00 CET).
