REVIEW: MIRANDÉS 1 – DEPORTIVO 0 (LIGA)

18 Jul 2020
Disaster in Anduva. A coward Deportivo were unable to do anything and ended chaining a third straight defeat, and the other results pulled the Galicians into the relegation zone with only one matchday pending in the calendar.

BEFORE THE GAME
Coach Fernando Vázquez presented a 5-4-1 figure with novelties. Abdoulaye Ba was back after the poor game with Real Oviedo. Peru Nolaskoain was also a starter after skipping the last five games due to injury reasons.

Dani Giménez was the starting goalie, Eneko Bóveda covered the right side in defence, the left was for Salva Ruiz. Álex Bergantiños and Mujaid Sadick joined Ba at the central positions. Gaku Shibasaki and Nolaskoain played at midfield, Hugo Vallejo attacked from the right wing, Mollejo did it from the left and Christian Santos was the centre forward.

At CD Mirandés, coach Andoni Iraola made rotations, but he kept important players at the starting lineup like Mickaël Malsa, Jon Guridi and Martin Merquelanz. The reference for the goals was Marcos André.

FIRST HALF
Another poor first half by Deportivo. The Galicians were surpassed by a more willful CD Mirandés, and the advantage could have been better at half-time, but the circumstances kept a minimal advantage for the locals.

The game started with long ball possessions for both sides, at minute 4, Depor had it’s first approximation, it was a shot of Peru Nolaskoain that went wide. The first opportunity for CD Mirandés was a corner-kick that Marcos André couldn’t head properly (7’).

With the passage of the minutes, Depor started to be locked at their side of the field. The locals were having the ball and the opportunities weren’t arriving. But then the goal came for CD Mirandés in their first shot on target.

Bóveda committed a foul at the edge of the area and Martin Merquelanz didn’t miss against a Dani Giménez that reacted too late. At this point Depor were at the edge of the relegation zone and there wasn’t any reaction from the Galicians.

Actually, the locals were closer to score the second. At minute 26, they had a double chance after a corner-kick and in both opportunities Dani Giménez made the saves. CD Mirandés were doing a lot of damage through the counterattack and Deportivo were in deep trouble.

Deportivo’s first shot on target in the game came at minute 35, it was a free-kick for Gaku that was blocked by Lizoain.  The Galicians tried to push within the final ten minutes, but their crosses ended in nothing. More dangerous was the volley of Marcos André that went over the crossbar (42’).

The second goal could have arrived at minute 43, a long ball from the defence was wasted by the local team up to three times, there were three shots, the first was saved by Dani GiménezBa and the third went out.

SECOND HALF
There was some improvement in the second part, but more for the impulse of the changes than for football, because later the team was unable to seize any of the few chances to tie the game. The other results pulled the team into relegation.

Fernando Vázquez made four changes at half-time. Borja Valle, Keko Gontán, Aketxe and Sabin Merino entered for Nolaskoain, Salva Ruiz, Christian Santos and Ba. The Galicians had more impulse since the kick-off and they earned two corner-kick in a matter of three minutes.

CD Mirandés were also having arrivals, mainly for the errors passing the ball by the visiting team, but the next opportunity was for Aketxe, Gontán released a cross that the Basque player connected inside the area and Lizoain made the save (53’).

Suddenly the results at other stadiums were putting Depor in relegation, and the team started to lose the impulse of the first minutes. The locals were looking dangerous in the counterattack and Martin Merquelanz had the chance to score the second for the locals, but his shot was deflected to corner-kick (65’).

Depor were lacking ideas, but the visiting side had an opportunity at minute 70. A cross from Mollejo couldn’t be connected properly by neither Keko nor Sabin Merino and the ball went out.

The game became open, Depor were desperate to arrive and allowed the counterattack by CD Mirandés. Mujaid had to make a couple of key interceptions, while in the attack the crosses by Vallejo and Mollejo weren’t finding a receiver. The only good news is that CD Tenerife tied the score against CD Lugo, and Depor were out of relegation.

Claudio Beauvue entered for Álex and the coach changed the line of five defenders until the end. Aketxe had a good opportunity at minute 81, his shot was saved by Lizoain and later Vallejo had a goal disallowed for offside. Four minutes later Keko Gontán could have scored, but he lasted too much in firing at the far post after a free-kick.

The same Keko had the last chance, but hos shot from inside the area was deflected (90+1’). And then CD Lugo scored the winning goal in their game at CD Tenerife during the added time, result that pulled Deportivo into the relegation zone with only one matchday remaining.

AFTER THE GAME
Third straight defeat for Deportivo, once again the team had a very disappointing performance, the players were unable to create scoring chances and the fear was clearly present. The coach was desperate and made four changes at half-time, too late as Depor were unable to rescue anything.

Now Depor is in relegation with only one matchday remaining. Now the only chance to stay at Segunda is by defeating CF Fuenlabrada on Monday, and later to see CD Lugo failing against CD Mirandés or Albacete not adding the three points in their visit to Cádiz CF.
