A LEAGUE WITH 24 TEAMS

02 Aug 2020
The petition of the RFEF remains on: to have a Segunda tournament with 24 teams. La Liga is pending to respond. A “no” as an answer will cause the extension of the legal insecurity.

The competition committee suggested that a Segunda tournament of 24 teams for the season 2020/2021 is the best way to fix the mess provoked by the suspension of the game CF Fuenlabrada Vs. Deportivo. For now, La Liga is pending to respond.

The best explanation to why the competition committee made this proposal is that they know that Deportivo and CD Numancia have a legal base to protest and that, if both clubs take the case to a legal courthouse, then a judge will probably freeze the tournament as a precaution measure, meaning more delays.

And time is the problem right now, starting with the promotion playoff to Primera. The Competition Committee has frozen the game Depor Vs. Fuenlabrada, and therefore the playoff is also frozen. And with the next season scheduled to start at the end of September, the clubs are already upset, starting with Elche CF, side that doesn’t even known if they have the right to fight for the promotion to the elite.

Another problem will come if La Liga doesn’t accept the plan of the federation, because the legal insecurity will continue. The number of clubs playing n each league season are agreed in a document signed by both La Liga and the Federation at the start of each campaign, and it isn’t clear what would happen if there’s a disagreement. Some analysts say that the RFEF has the last word, but others affirm that the federation needs the votes of the clubs.
