PREVIEW: DEPORTIVO – RACING FERROL (LIGA)

29 Nov 2020
Deportivo switch the system as it faces a rival that’s practicing an attractive style. Keko is out of the game and Rolan was picked for the first time.

Referee: Alfonso Vicente Moral
Kick-off: 19h00 CET (Riazor)

STATISTICS: OPPOSITE POLES
This game represents the most radical difference of styles, at least statistically, in this subgroup. Racing Ferrol is the best scorer with 8 goals netted in 5 games. Deportivo have scored the half of that number, which is the second worst mar in the subgroup only behind bottom place Coruxo FC (0).

Meanwhile, Deportivo represent the best defence in the subgroup, this after only conceding one goal in 5 meetings. Racing Ferrol have allowed 7, which is the second worst mark in the subgroup only behind Salamanca CF (8).

The match also represents the 14th visit of Racing Ferrol to Deportivo playing in a league competition. The Green Devils have only won twice at the Riazor, one of those victories took place in their last meeting for the Segunda season 1980/81 (0-2).

The most recent meeting between these two clubs in an official competition took place in the Copa Del Rey 2002/03, it was a one-leg series in the second round that turned into an exciting game at A Malata. Depor won 3-4 with braces from Tristán and Luque.

DEPORTIVO: SWITCHING THE SYSTEM
Coach Fernando Vázquez will switch the system into a 5-2-3 in an attempt to counteract the 5-3-2 scheme of the rival and also as a respond to the absence of Keko Gontán. It’s surprising, but it was what the coach worked throughout the week. During Friday’s press conference, he didn’t want to admit the switch, but one day later he tested again the same draw.

Team news: Keko Gontán didn’t pass the late test and is out of the game. The winger joins Derik Osede and Miku at the injury room. Jorge Valín returns after surpassing an ankle sprain, but the right-back should start on the bench. Diego Rolan was picked for the first time on the season and should have minutes in the second part. Striker Adri Castro is the only player from Fabril picked for the game.

Man to watch: Striker Claudio Beauvue. The French attacker has had discrete presentations after scoring the first goals on the season. Now, with Rolan showing up, this could be his last chance to demonstrate why he should be the starting striker at Deportivo.

Picked players: (19) Carlos Abad, Lucho García (goalkeepers); Eneko Bóveda, Jorge Valín, Mujaid Sadick, Borja Granero, Héctor Hernández, Salva Ruiz (defenders); Álex Bergantiños, Celso Borges, Uche Agbo, Nacho González, Jorge Lara, Borja Galán, Iago Gandoy (midfielders); Claudio Beauvue, Rui Costa, Diego Rolan & Adri Castro (attackers).

Predicted lineup: (5-3-2) Carlos Abad – Bóveda, Mujaid, Álex Bergantiños, Borja Granero, Salva Ruiz - Borges, Uche Agbo - Borja Galán, Beauvue, Lara.

RACING FERROL: FINDING THE WAY BACK TO SEGUNDA
It’s an unknown story for many of the youngest fans in Galicia, but Racing de Ferrol had a rich story at Segunda División; actually the derbies against Deportivo were more attractive than the ones with RC Celta between the 1940’s and the 1970’s. But the last decades have been nefarious for the Green Devils, their last stage at Segunda occurred on the season 2007/08, since then they have been living between Segunda B and Tercera División.

But there’s a ray of hope with the arrival of coach Emilio Larraz, he landed at the club in 2018 and led the promotion to Segunda B, and later solidified the team in the league ending 11th on last season. For the present campaign his team is displaying an attractive game characterized by the goals, a 5-3-2 figure with the aerial game as their main strength (4 of their 8 goals came in aerial plays)

Team news: Álex López is out suspended and the main question is if the coach will keep the 5-3-2 system. The ex-Celta is considered to be the heart of the squad. Larraz admitted before the game that he could be tempted to switch the draw, but it’s expected that he will keep it with Javi Rey claiming the spot of López. The rest of the team is available for the game.

Man to watch: Midfielder Elson José Dias ‘Elsinho’. The Brazilian pivote had completed his whole career between Brazil and Mexico, and this season, at the age of 29, he debuted in Europe joining Racing Ferrol. And he left a good impression, he is a midfielder that helps a lot in defense and that likes to attack by the sides, and his height (1.92m), allows him to dominate the aerial game; actually he has scored twice through headers.

Picked players: (18) Diego Rivas, José María Leobalde (goalkeepers); Diego Seoane, Fernando Pumar, Jon García, Yeferson Quintana, Quique Fornos, Bruno Rivada (defenders); Elson José Dias ‘Elsinho’, Fernando Beltrán, Javi Rey, Dani Nieto, Juan Sebastián Peñaloza, Daniel Abalo, Josep Caballé (midfielders); Nathan Palafoz, David Rodríguez, José Luis Gómez ‘Joselu’ (strikers).

Predicted lineup: (5-3-2) Diego Rivas - Diego Seoane, Quique Fornos, Yeferson Quintana, Jon García, Fernando Pumar – Elsinho, Javi Rey, Fer Beltrán - David Rodríguez, Joselu.
