A good first half was enough to secure the victory. Diego Rolan debuted and scored the lonely goal for Deportivo.

Big surprise as Diego Rolan was a starter in the game. It was the first official game for the Uruguayan striker after four years at the club. Fernando Vázquez tested a system with five defenders all week long, but in the end he chose a 4-4-2 formation.

Carlos Abad was the starting goalie, Eneko Bóveda covered the right side of the defense, the left flank was for Salva Ruiz. The central positions were for Mujaid Sadick and Borja Granero. Celso Borges and Uche Agbo were the centre midfielders. Borja Galán and Nacho González attacked from the wings, then Claudio Beauvue joined Rolan in attack.

At Racing Ferrol, coach Emilio Larraz switched the system into a 4-4-2 as he didn’t have Álex López, who was suspended. David Rodríguez and José Luis Gómez ‘Joselu’ were the two strikers in the scheme. There were three former Depor’s players at the lineup: Diego Rivas, Diego Seoane and Quique Fornos.

A good first part at the Riazor. Deportivo lacked opportunities, but Los Blanquiazules presented a decent offensive game. Racing Ferrol also had a good performance, though they only created danger in set-pieces.

The first attempt for Deportivo was a shot of Beauvue that was deflected by a defender and that was later caught by visiting goalie Diego Rivas (3’). Then the locals were awarded with a penalty, Diego Rolan was entering the area by the left and the ball hit the arm of Yeferson Quintana. the referee whistled the penalty and the same Rolan transformed from the spot.

The goal brought confidence to Deportivo. Borja Galán and Nacho González were moving at will on the sides, while Rolan and Beauvue were combining. The first approximation for Racing Ferrol was a corner-kick in which Bruno Rivada headed the ball out (13’).

Deportivo continued having the ball possession, Nacho González and Borja Galán were pretty active on the wings, and it helped to open the space for Rolan and Beauvue. Still, the locals weren’t creating clear chances to score.

At minute 23, the Green Devils had a chance in a corner-kick, the ball hit the shoulder of Mujaid, the visiting side asked for a penalty, but it ended in a counterattack in which Rolan assisted Nacho González and the Uruguayan winger couldn’t resolve the play with his scissors-kick attempt.

By the middle of the half, Racing Ferrol had already improved its game. It was combining at midfield, though later they lacked depth. Rolan had a new chance at minute 30. Borges drilled a volley from midfield, the ball went into the path of the Uruguayan attacker at the edge of the area, but Diego Rivas arrived first and cleared the danger with the head.

The first good opportunity for Racing Ferrol came at minute 36, it was a lateral free-kick that David Rodríguez collected at the edge of the area, and his low shot was blocked by Carlos Abad. The visiting side had played a good first half, but their main approximations only occurred through set-pieces.

The second half was totally different, Racing Ferrol had the ball at the start, but later it didn’t know what to do with it. Depor weren’t chaining straight passes until Gandoy entered the game. Los Blanquiazules dominated the actions within the final twenty minutes, though without creating a chance to score.

The start of the second part was more imprecise. Racing Ferrol had the same mismatches of the first part, while Depor were failing passes in the transition defence-attack. Nacho González was failing too much, while Borja Galán was no long appearing on the wings and instead was playing behind the attackers.

Depor’s first chance in the second part was a direct free-kick of Borja Galán, the ball went over the crossbar (55’). Then Álex Bergantiños replaced Beauvue and the draw was switched into a 5-4-1, because the Galician player was performing at the centre of the defence.

The second substitution for the Galicians was the entry of Yago Gandoy for Nacho González. This modification changed the game, because b>Gandoy turned to be the guide that Depor needed. The locals started to chain long ball possessions and it reduced the pace of the rival.

The first chance for Racing Ferrol in this half came in a lateral free-kick that Joselu headed at the box, but Carlos Abad was well-placed and caught the ball without problems (63’). Racing Ferrol had the opportunity to lock Depor at their side of the pitch, but the true is that they didn’t give any sense of danger as they lacked ideas. As it happened throughout the game, their only way to reach the area was releasing long crosses or set-pieces.

Depor slightly improved in the following minutes, but it wasn’t enough to create a scoring opportunity. But at least it took the ball away from the visiting side. The last substitutions at Depor were the entries of José Lara and Rui Costa for Borja Galán and Rolan.

The presence of Diego Rolan motivated a Deportivo that played a good first half, it scored a goal and submitted a rival that only created danger in set-pieces. Later the change of system affected Depor and the second half turned to be boring.

Deportivo have now won four of the six games played so far, it is the leader of both the subgroup and the group and has chained five straight clean sheets. The next game is the visit to Pontevedra CF (Saturday, 17h00 CET).
