OTHERS/DEPORTIVO B

The following signings never actually played at the club, or never made their Liga debut for Deportivo:

BARATA
His full name is Joao María Meneses Becerra, but he's nicknamed 'Barata'. Born on 5 June, 1972, he was signed in 1999 by Deportivo from Mérida for around €3,8 million. He had scored 21 goals for Mérida in just 17 matches in the Segunda División, but never would play at Deportivo. In 2000 he went from Sporting Braga to Spanish club Tenerife, whom he left in 2004. In 2001 he was suspended by the Spanish FA for having a fake passport.

DAVID PIRRI
Catalan player David Almazán Abril (football name ‘David Pirri) was signed in 1999 by Deportivo. The left defender, born on 12 February 1974, played at Barcelona B before he made his debut in the Primera División at Mérida in 1995. Deportivo bought him in 1999 and immediately loaned him to Las Palmas. He spent the season 2000/2001 at Numancia, and the next at Real Sporting de Gijón before being included in the 2002 deal for Zaragoza’s ’Toro’ Acuña. He was part of their team that achieved promotion, and he played 23 Primera matches in 2003/2004 for the Copa del Rey winners.

JAVI LÓPEZ
Francisco Javier López Aguilera was born on 24 August, 1973. Nicknamed ‘Javi López’, he was signed in 1998 by Deportivo, coming from Racing de Santander on a 450-million-peseta (ca. €2,9 million) transfer. He had played 66 Liga matches in his two previous seasons at the club from Northern Spain. But Barcelona-born Javi López, who once was part of the Real Madrid youth system, would not fit into the plans of Javier Irureta. The club had just signed defender Romero, and Javi López would play just one Liga match for the Galicians: eleven minutes during a 0-1 win at Valladolid on 29 November, 1998. He was loaned out to Tenerife for the remainder of that season, where he played eleven matches but got relegated with them. Nevertheless, he was sold to the island club and stayed there until 2004.

SEOANE

WILTORD
During the presentation of defender Armando, in the summer of 1996, Deportivo president Lendoiro announced the signing of 22-year old French striker Sylvain Wiltord of Stade Rennes. At that time he was playing the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. He was loaned out for the season 1996/1997 to his former club Rennes. In 1997 he was sold by Deportivo to French side Bordeaux. Both clubs agreed that Deportivo would receive around forty per cent of any subsequent sell-on fee. Wiltord played at Bordeaux between 1997-2000, scored on average one goal per 2 matches, and attracted the attention of several big clubs. Eventually, he was sold to Arsenal for almost €23 million. The highlight of his Arsenal career was scoring the goal at Old Trafford, allowing the team to clinch the 2002 FA Premier League title at the home ground of arch-rivals Manchester United. In 2004 he returned to France to play for Olympique Lyon. For France, Wiltord has been capped 90 times, scoring 26 goals. One of those goals came in the 94th minute of the Euro 2000 final, tying Italy.
