Defender CHAPI is Deportivo’s second youth defender who is making an impact in the season 2007/2008 after his colleague Adrián López.

La Coruña-born Chapi was a fundamental piece at Deportivo B achieving promotion to Segunda División B in 2007. The year before the team had missed promotion by just one goal. In that season 2005/2006 he was already called up for the first team by coach Caparrós for several Liga matches. A curious call-up was the one in April for the home match against Sevilla (0-0). Juanma limped offer injured during the warming-up and Chapi was called at home. He explained: "They phoned me at my home fifteen minutes before the game started. I didn't have time to react and arrived as soon as I could. I’m happy that I was called although I didn't have the change to play”. It was Galician midfielder Iago who back then predicted a great future for Chapi at the club. At the end of the season 2006/2007 it was Chapi himself who scored the goal in Depor B’s final match of the season against Don Benito (1-1) which sealed the promotion.

For the season 2007/2008 he remained a Depor B player although he was used in several friendlies of the first team, including the one at Vitoria Guimarães. His official debut in the first team he made on 16 December 2007 during the home match against Real Zaragoza (1-1). Chapi (22) replaced the injured Manuel Pablo at the right back position with the score being 0-1 and formed Depor's defence with Filipe (22), Adrián López (20) and Coloccini (25). He did well although near the end was sent-off for having received two yellow cards which meant a suspension for the next Liga match at Levante. Chapi said about this curious incident: “One always has to take something positive from things. I had just entered the match when I received my first card. And I think that my second card wasn’t really one. Anyway, this is something from the past and I’ll be concentrating on the current”. His coach Lotina quickly announced the he had one certainty for the Copa match at Espanyol three days later: Chapi would play next to ‘ten others’. Chapi confirmed the news and said that he was “very happy” about it. “I hope to return the faith in me on the pitch”.

As a player he is described by Depor B’s second coach Juan Riveiro as “an usual strong player. Next to Xisco he is the most explosive player of the first and second squad of Deportivo. They’re the fastest. Besides, Chapi has a great technique for a central defender”. Although Chapi plays as central defender in Deportivo B and in the season 2006/2007 formed an unbeatable duo with Adrián López, he also has much experience as right back. “It’s not my natural position”, he explained. “But I can play as right back. I’ve done that many times before and it’s a position where one can be more offensive”.
