Disappointing game. The poor conditions of the pitch influenced in the result, but more was expected from a Depor that only completed one shot on target.

First game in the second round and debut for coach Rubén De La Barrera. He chose the 4-3-3 system trained during the week; the novelty was that Fabril’s Adri Castro was the starting choice in attack leaving Rui Costa on the bench.

Carlos Abad was the starting keeper, Jorge Valín covered the right side in defence, the left flan was for Salva Ruiz. The central positions were covered by Mujaid Sadick and Borja Granero. The trio at midfield was composed by Álex Bergantiños, Celso Borges and Yago Gandoy, then Jorge Lara and Borja Galán joined Adri Castro in attack.

At Salamanca UDs, coach Lolo Escobar was also debuting and presented the 4-4-2 lineup that was expected. The novelty was that Ernest Ohemeng was playing alongside Uxío Da Pena in attack.

Poor first half. There was a noticed change at Depor as the team was trying to practice a passing game that was damaging the rival, but later the outcome was the same as only two chances to score were created (no shots on target). The rival was willful and gave some problems, but Deportivo were mainly crippled by the poor state of the pitch.

Depor had the ball since the kick-off, the Galicians were attempting to displaying a passing game, while the locals were holding on and waiting to release the counterattack. The first chance to score came at minute 9, a cross from Lara was headed by Adri Castro before the late move of local goalie Dani Barbero and the ball went over the crossbar.

Depor were looking fine moving the ball and was especially dangerous attacking by the right wing through Lara. Meanwhile, Salamanca UDS were having some depth with their counterattacks, but what complicated the situation was the state of the pitch in the area defended by Depor, because it was frozen and partially covered by snow.

The most dangerous play by Salamanca UDS was a free-kick in which there were three shots, the one of Javi Navas went in (30’), but the goal was disallowed due to an offside. Depor responded with a counterattack in which Lara couldn’t shot on target when the keeper was misplaced, he tried to assist Borges and the play ended in a corner-kick (32’). For the final 15 minutes, the game became a festival of errors as the losses were constant, mainly caused by the state of the pitch.

No big changes in the final part, Depor continued to be a clueless team in offense. Only one shot on target and the changes didn’t work.

The second part started with the first shot on target in the game, Sergio Molina attempted from outside the area and Abad blocked the attempt (46’). One minute later, Fernando Llorente tried in a similar action and he missed the target.

Depor continued to be lost, like it happened since minute 20 of the first part. There wasn’t any promising attack, just long ball possessions at midfield. Lara was no longer a factor and the team needed fresh ideas.

But the changes weren’t arriving and the side attempting shots was Salamanca UDS, at minute 62, a free-kick of Sergio Molina was luckily deflected by Abad to corner-kick.  Depor’s first -and only- shot on target in the game came until minute 65, it was a loss of Salamanca UDS in the output of the ball, Borja Galán found the ball at the edge of the area and his shot was blocked by Barbero

Then De La Barrera made two changes, Osede and Rui Costa replaced Gandoy and Borja Galán. The draw was now a 4-4-2 with Valín playing on the wing and Derik Osede covering the right side in defence.

The changes didn’t work as Deportivo continued to be a clueless team in attack, the third modification was the entry of Nacho González for Adri Castro. The Galicians continued to disappoint as the game turned into a festival of errors as the players were slipping.

Each side had an opportunity within the final ten minutes. First, a cross from the right was headed out by substitute Diego ‘Puma’ Chávez (83’). Two minutes later, Lara drilled a pass into the path of Salva Ruiz, but the defender couldn’t resolve from inside the area.

Another disappointing game by Deportivo. The Galicians only completed one shot on target in the debut for De La Barrera. No ideas in attack in a pitch that wasn’t in conditions to practice football. Depor remain winless in 2021.

Deportivo remain in the promotion zone only for the results of other games. The next game is the visit of SD Compostela to the Riazor (Sunday, 17h00 CET).
