REVIEW: DEPOR LADIES 0 – EIBAR 0 (LIGA)

11 Feb 2021
Depor Ladies dropped two points in the quest for the permanence; Eibar had the best opportunities, though the Ladies hit the post in the second part.

BEFORE THE GAME
Matchday 20 was advanced as the weekend was supposed to be off for the players, but Depor Ladies are going to play on Sunday recovering the postponed game with Real Betis (matchday 14). After the refreshing victory at Santa Teresa CD, it meant a good opportunity to attempt the escape from the relegation zone as the team is going to have back-to-back games at Abegondo.

Coach Manu Sánchez was still missing winger Carolina Arbeláez for injury reasons. Iris Arnaiz continued to perform at the centre of the defence.  Once again, the coach had to pick Eva Dios and María Figueroa from the B squad in order to cover the available spots.

THE MATCH
Depor Ladies have added four of the last six points in dispute, but the team is running out of time in the quest for the permanence. The game was balanced, but SD Eibar had more opportunities and presented a better game playing on the counterattack. Depor Ladies only created danger in set-pieces, though they had the best chance in the game after hitting the post.

SD Eibar looked better within the first minutes, at minute 9, the visiting side had a double opportunity. It was a lateral free-kick in which the header of Ane Pérez was saved by Sullastres, the loose ball was connected by Llompart and she sent the ball wide.

Depor Ladies weren’t feeling comfortable, they were too slow in attack and later the defensive line had to deal with the fast counterattacks led by Thembi Kgatlana. At minute 16, one of these counterattacks ended with Carla Morera firing from inside the area, but her shot went over the crossbar.

The locals had to wait until minute 22 in order to have an opportunity, it was a free-kick action in which Stephannie Blanco sent the ball wide. Three minutes later a lateral free-kick of Alba Merino was close to give the ball to Gaby at the near post, but keeper Noelia García arrived first.

The game was more balanced within the last ten minutes of the first part. Depor Ladies were having the ball possession, but they lacked depth and ideas to break the defence, while the visiting side was trying to hold on the score.

The start of the second half was similar to the first. SD Eibar were creating problems through the speed of Thembi Kgatlana, while the locals continued to have opportunities in set-pieces. At minute 53, a corner-kick of Peke was headed by Ainoa Campo and her attempt went close to the post.

The best chance in the game for Depor Ladies came at minute 66, and it wasn’t a set-piece. Peke made the play on the left wing and released a low cross that was connected by Alba Merino at the near post, and the ball hit the right post and was later cleared by the defence.

Manu Sánchez made the changes until the final minutes, just when the team was already tired. Kika and Michelle Romero entered for Alba Merino and Peke, but there were no more chances to score.
