Suffered victory for Deportivo. The team deserved the three points, but the Galicians suffered at the end after wasting clear chances to extend the lead. First goal and first win in 2021.

Rubén De La Barrera used the expected 4-3-3 formation, but he made several unexpected changes; more specifically he made six changes compared to the lineup that lost at Coruxo FC. The first one was the presence of Lucho García at the goal, the Colombian keeper was claiming the spot of Carlos Abad. Miku was going to start, but he got injured in the warming up and Jose Lara claimed the starting spot.

Eneko Bóveda covered the right side in defence, the left flank was for Héctor Hernández, the central positions were for Mujaid Sadick and Borja Granero. The trident at midfield was composed by Celso Borges, Uche Agbo and Diego Villares. Lara attacked from the right wing, Rai Nascimiento did it from the left and Rayco Rodríguez was the centre forward.

At CD Guijuelo, coach Chuchi Jorqués presented the 3-5-2 system that he announced; Isma Cerro joined Antonio Pino in attack, while Carlos Rubén was pulled to midfield, therefore Mohamed Kamal started on the bench.

Positive impression left by Deportivo in the first part. The presence of three fast wingers on the pitch (Rai, Rayco and Lara) allowed the team to constantly break the defensive wall of the rival, and the icing was to finally break the spell and score a goal.

Depor begun the game trying to put pressure in attack, CD Guijuelo was suffering and the first chance to score was a clear one. A long throw from defence was collected by Lara on the right wing, he entered the area and Raí came from behind in order to shot when both players were alone against visiting goalie José Antonio Salcedo, and his attempt passed close to the far post (8’).

After this opportunity, the game became more balanced. Deportivo were still pushing in attack, but at the same time, CD Guijuelo were finding the ball and big lagoons at midfield, therefore it wasn’t strange to see them stepping into the local side of the pitch.

And then Deportivo finally broke the spell and scored a goal. Uche Agbo stole the ball at midfield and made a quick pass that released the counterattack, Héctor Hernández released a low cross from the left, and after a rebound, Lara collected the ball at the penalty spot and rifled it into the top-corner. It was the first goal in 2021 for Depor and the first after 642 minutes (official games).

Then centre-back Jonathan Martin got injured at CD Guijuelo and the coach switched the draw into a 4-4-2 with the entry of Kike Pina. Depor played better in the last stretch of the game, Rayco, Rai and Lara were earning the back of the defenders and the second goal could have arrived before the break. After a throw-in, a quick combination left Rayco with the ball at the right side of the box and his strong shot was cleared over the crossbar by Salcedo (45+2’).

Suffered second half for Deportivo, but not for playing badly, but for wasting clear chances to score and been forced to defend the narrow lead locked at their area. CD Guijuelo pressed within the last ten minutes, even only having ten men after an expulsion provoked by Borja Galán.

The final part started with a Deportivo that was trying to attack, while CD Guijuelo made offensive changes in the quest for the equalizer. The rival advanced the lines, something that was opening the game for the fast plays of Rai and Rayco.

Keko Gontán replaced Lara and Depor became a more electric team, in his first appearance Keko led a counterattack that ended with a cross of Villarres that Rayco sent out (65’), only one minute later Keko appeared again in a secondary play of a corner-kick, and this time Rai missed the target with a low shot from the penalty spot.

Villares had the next opportunity, it was a counterattack in which he tried to chip the ball over the keeper, but he sent the ball wide (70’).  The first chance to score for CD Guijuelo in the game came two minutes later, substitute Mohamed Kamal found the ball at the edge of the area and he sent the ball over the crossbar.

The next changes at Depor were the entries of Beauvue and Borja Galán for Rayco and Villares.  Depor lost control of the game at this point, because CD Guijuelo sought for the equalizer despite been reduced to ten men. The player sent off was Mohamed Kamal, who saw two straight yellow cards, first for fouling Borja Galán and later for insulting the referee.

The biggest chance to score for CD Guijuelo came at minute 81, after a long play at Depor’s area, a cross from the left was about to be connected by Carlos Rubén at the far post, but somehow Borja Galán ran ten meters and cleared the danger through a header.

De La Barrera tried to protect the result and made the last two substitutions with Derik Osede and Álex Bergantiños replacing Rai and Uche Agbo, the latter was already booked and was close to be sent off after a tackle at midfield.  CD Guijuelo didn’t have more clear opportunities, but Depor suffered more for the current needs and the narrow score.

First victory in 2021 for Deportivo. The Galicians deserved the victory, but they suffered a lot within the last ten minutes after wasting three chances to extend the lead. The goal of Lara cut a long drought of 642 minutes without scoring a goal in official meetings.
