CARLOS MATHEU ON TARGET?

03 Jul 2008
According to Argentinean newspaper Diario HOY, Deportivo is offering $2.5 million (€1.59 million) for the defender Carlos Matheu. He's an Argentinean central defender that can also perform as right-back and that's currently playing at Independiente de Avellaneda. The paper predicts the defender will end playing in La Coru?a.

President Augusto C?sar Lendoiro said during Mista's presentation that new arrivals to the squad will depend exclusively on the exits, however the rumours linking players with Deportivo still flowing out. The last one is Carlos Javier Matheu (23). He is an Argentinean central defender that can also perform as a right-back and even as a winger.

The source for this news is La Plata-newspaper Diario HOY. This paper claims that Deportivo is offering $2.5 million (€1.59 million) for the player. The source also informs that his club, Independiente de Avellandeda, is asking for more money but that both sides will probably reach an agreement and predicts the defender will end playing in La Coru?a.

And its that Matheu was linked on the past summer market with Juventus FC in a deal that was valued in €6 million, but in the end the Italian side preferred to sign Deportivo's Jorge Andrade. Javier Matheu has played his entire professional career at Independiente, he debuted on the Torneo Apertura 2004, but in only gained a spot in the starting squad until the year 2007 after the injury of Leandro Gioda (August 2007).

The Quilmes-born defender shined in Torneo Apertura 2007 and accumulated 945 minutes on the pitch and even scored four goals (including one against Boca Juniors and other against River Plate). For Torneo Clausura 2008 he almost doubled the number of minutes (1,300) and scored one goal. Matheu has been described as a tall player (height = 1.83) that controls the aerial game and that likes to participate in the offensive manoeuvres on both wings.

The arrival of Matheu should be interpreted as a confirmation of an exit at Depor's defensive zone. Probably Fabricio Coloccini or Pablo Amo. The club still waiting for a proper offer for Coloccini, while its aware of Zaragoza's interest in Amo. It was also informed that Matheu possess an Italian passport, reason why he won't occupy a foreign spot at Deportivo’s squad.
