DEFINING THE RENEWALS

19 May 2009
Lendoiro wants to close or discard the renewals of Verd??, Pablo Alvarez and Sergio during this week, while the papers are already discarding the continuity of Pablo Amo, Mun??a and De Guzm??n. Meanwhile, Depor’s president wants to extend the career of Lafita at the club.

After the renewals of coach Lotina and right-back defender Manuel Pablo, president Augusto C?sar Lendoiro is now trying to define what will happen with the other six players that are ending contract with the club in June: Verd??, Pablo Alvarez, Sergio, Pablo Amo, Mun??a and De Guzm??n.

The first three are the only ones that have been contacted by the club in order to negotiate an extension on their contracts, while it is understood that the other three men will be released. The case that seems more advanced is the one of Pablo Alvarez, the right winger has a three-year offer over the desk, but he said a couple of months ago that he was preferring to see what would happen in the last matchdays of the season before taking a final decision, this since he doesn’t want to continue if the coach will not count with him ahead of next season.

But his latest appearances as starter have convinced him, now ?the Shark? is open to negotiate with Depor, as his agent Jos? Luis Tamargo told to newspaper La Opini??n a Coru?a, ?He wants to continue and that issue has been already talked. What happened on Saturday was a little weird –his appearance as substitute against Getafe- but Pablo is a serious person and the decision was already taken. The club is offering some things and we want others, but there’s a good vibe between both parties and we can reach an agreement.?

And after Tuesday’s training session at Abegondo, the same player was admitting his interest in signing the renewal, ?I can’t tell you right now what I am going to do with my career, because we are at the middle of a negotiation, but what I can tell you is that this is the stronger option. The idea is to see my agent arriving during this week in order to sit and talk with the club, and let’s see if we can reach an agreement. There was an approach before, but I wasn’t playing too often and we agreed to wait for the final part of the year in order to see the evolution of this. I have had bad moments throughout the year, and now I am enjoying of the best ones. Lately, I have felt involved with the squad and my idea has changed.? The Shark said to reporters.

The other two cases seemed more complicated, Sergio and Joan Verd??, though there have been some novelties in the last hours. In past weeks and after several meetings, no agreements were reached with their agents and Lendoiro gave an ultimatum, as he said on Saturday after the clash with Getafe, ?In the next three, four or five days we will have a clear picture about the renewals, in one sense or another. In the first days of the week we’ll have clear the situation of two or three players.?

The papers have understood these words as a deadline imposed by the president arguing that if the renewals are not closed by Thursday, then the club will understand they won’t continue and will start to search for replacements. The case of Sergio was stopped until Monday, his father, Avelino Gonzalez, had a meeting with Lendoiro on the past Thursday and the negotiations seemed in the same dead point. But on Monday a new meeting was held and this time, there was an advance.

On Tuesday’s night, Avelino told to Radio Cadena Ser that an agreement was close to occur as both parties already decided the duration of the new contract: two years plus the option to extend it for one additional season, just like the renewal signed by Manuel Pablo on the past week. So far the only difference is related to the amount of the wages, Avelino said this difference is ?small’. In past weeks it was commented that Deportivo was trying to cut Sergio’s salary by a 60%, something the Catalan player wasn’t admitting.

Meanwhile, Joan Verd?? hasn’t decided yet what to do with his career. He is one of the players that has grown the most on this season and actually, he is the second best scorer at Depor’s team. On Monday Sportpaper Deporte Campe??n was speculating that RCD Espanyol was presenting an offer that doubles the renewal offer of Depor, but his agent, Magico Diaz, said on Tuesday to La Voz De Galicia that this is not true and that the proposition of the Catalan club is practically similar to the one of Depor, he even said this proposition ?was not convincing the player?. However, he also affirmed that Benfica in Portugal is offering more money to the midfielder.

THE FUTURE OF LAFITA
The news in Aragon are that Lendoiro will try to keep ?ngel Lafita for the season 2009/2010. Depor already fulfilled the buyout clause as it paid €2 million to Real Zaragoza during the past summer window, but the Aragonians kept a new buyout option that they can fulfill in 2009 (€3 million) or in 2010 (€3.5 million). Now the idea of Lendoiro is to convince Zaragoza to execute the clause until next year, something that can be a benefit for both clubs.

For Deportivo because it will keep the player at its squad for one more season, for Zaragoza because they haven’t secured yet the promotion to Primera (they are currently third at Segunda), and also because to wait for an additional year could mean an increase on the market value of the winger (Zaragoza want to sell the player), especially since the expected selling prices for the upcoming summer market are too low due the financial difficulties worldwide. According to paper El Periodico de Arag??n, Lendoiro will talk to Eduardo Bandr?s (Zaragoza’s president) on this week about this matter. Both men will be in La Coru?a on Thursday and Friday attending to a normal meeting of the Spanish Football Federation.
