Transfer news

Lendoiro and Lotina are not promising anything, but as usual there are several rumours linking Deportivo with possible exits and arrivals; the Galician club still searching for the wished top-scorer, while Urreta and Morel could leave.

Before the Copa clash against Córdoba CF, coach Miguel Angel Lotina gave a clear explanation on what to expect from the winter transfer window, “I spoke to Lendoiro of some issues, and we don’t know yet if we are going to sign or not; the market is the one that will tell us what to do and neither will sign a player just for the pleasure of doing it, we don’t have that need. If a striker that can improve what we already have appears, and if we can afford him, then we will do it. About exits, I don’t know anything about that issue, but don’t count in seeing any player leaving.”

And as it could be expected, the names of possible incorporations to Deportivo are strikers, after all the Galician club is ending the year 2010 as the worst scorer at Primera División: So far, five names have been mentioned: Georgios Samaras (25, Celtic), Ante Vukusic (19, Hajduk Split), Ante Rukavina (24, Dinamo Zagreb), Juan Angel Albin (24, Getafe) and José Verdú ‘Toche’ (27, Cartagena).

Samara was the first name mentioned; he is 25 and seemed to be searching for an exit from Celtic Glasgow; however nothing has been said within the last three weeks and in the last days the name of the Greek attacker has been linked with English club West Bromwich Albion, so it seems that everything was a simple rumour.

Meanwhile, within the last two weeks it seemed that Depor was looking at Croatia as Sportpaper Deporte Campeón (DxT) was reporting that the club was targeting two strikers from the Balkan region. The first name liked with Depor was 19-year-old Vukusic, who is considered a future promise in his home country, but the latest report is that his club, HNK Hajduk Split, was asking €7.5 million for him.

That’s when the name of Rukavina came out; DxT wrote that Depor moved to this option as his club, NK Dinamo Zagreb, was only asking for €2 million. He’s 24 and has had a more discrete career as he didn’t have a nice couple of seasons at Panathinaikos FC (only 5 goals in 31 matches within the years 2008-2010). The Croatian media even speculated that there’s a meeting between his agents and Depor during the liga visit made to Atletico Madrid, but nothing more has been written since then.

And on this week two more names were linked with Depor, the first is Getafe’s Albin; he is not a natural striker, actually he is used to perform as a winger at Getafe CF and is well known for his skills and set-pieces. The Uruguayan ends his contract in June and DxT believes that Deportivo is targeting his signing.

The last name that came out is Toche, the second top-scorer at Segunda División during the year 2010. Toche is 27 and performs for Segunda club Cartagena FC, on the current season he has scored nine goals in liga, and since January he has added twenty goals to his tally, which leave him as the second top-scorer in the division during the year 2010, just behind Jorge Molina from Betis. The Murcian striker ends his contract in June and according to newspaper La Verdad, Depor and Zaragoza already contacted him ahead of next season, this since he won’t renew his contract with Cartagena.

The only thing for sure is that Lendoiro will not think twice if he founds an affordable top-scorer striker at the market, which in the end is difficult as Depor needs a man that can guarantee ten goals or more goals per campaign, and that kind of player often is expensive, or at least scarce.

Regardless to exits, Lotina was expecting to keep all his players, but since the Copa match against Córdoba there’s the strong rumour that left-back defender Claudio Morel wants to leave. According to DxT he is not feeling comfortable in La Coruña and is keen to cancel his contract in January.

The Paraguayan arrived to Depor late on the summer and just a few days later he was already a starter as he was the selected choice at the left side of the defence for the opening day against Zaragoza, but the misfortune due to the injuries and some visa problems erased his name from the squads, actually he has been off since Lotina decided to switch the system to the scheme with five defenders.

Other name linked with a possible exit is Jonathan Urreta; his agent Pablo Betancourt appeared in a local radio in Uruguay saying that there was a contact with Uruguayan Club Atletico Peñarol, contact that was later confirmed by the coach of the team, Diego Aguirre, however this operation will hardly take place as Depor has a loan contact with Benfica lasting until June.
