Beyond a game between two Primera clubs, Sunday’s match looks more like a battle at the hospital. And it’s that both teams have been struck by in the injuries in recent times. Depor will miss six men, while Espanyol misses five. Laure is also doubtful.

On Sunday, Deportivo visits the Cornellá-El Prat stadium in order to face RCD Espanyol (17h00 CET), and the true is that the game can be described as the confrontation between the two must unlucky teams in la liga in terms of casualties; all because both sides have been smashed by all kind of injury cases throughout the present season.

Firs to all, Deportivo already has four confirmed casualties for Sunday’s match due to this issue: Xisco (groin strain), Manuel Pablo, Valerón (both hamstring strain) and Riki (adductor). Madrilenian Riki sustained his injury on the past match with Real Sociedad and it was already confirmed by the club’s doctors that he will be out of action for about three or four weeks.

Canarian Valerón is not expected to return before the end of the month, but both Manuel Pablo and Xisco might be available for the next match against UD Levante (March 20). And there are two more casualties for the clash, both for suspension: Colotto and Rubén Pérez. And on Thursday Laure joined this unlucky list after the right-back sustained an ankle sprain in the last part of the training session. The scans confirmed the injury and it isn’t know yet if he will be ready to play on Sunday.

Therefore, Depor could end facing the game against Espanyol missing seven players, and five of them are normal starters (Manuel Pablo, Laure, Colotto, Riki and Ruben Perez). Still, there are other three injury cases that the club is dragging from Monday’s victory at the Riazor: Antonio Tomas (thigh), Lassad Nouioui (ankle sprain) and Andrés Guardado (muscular).

The first two weren’t able to end the game against the Basques, but on Wednesday coach Lotina told that both have big chances of been fit enough for the visit to RCD Espanyol, while the Mexican winger is ready to play, but the plan is to keep protecting the left winger during the trainings and not allowing him to play for the full ninety minutes. The trio was working apart during Thursday’s training. To also remember that Aythami is returning after been a last-minute casualty on Monday.

It has been a hard season for Deportivo in terms of injury cases. Just to mention the fact that only four players have been available for all the official games played so far on the season: Laure, Adrián, Rubén Pérez and Desmarets. Laure and Ruben Perez already missed a game, but it was for suspension and the Madrilenian defender is close to leave the list if his absence is finally confirmed. Everybody else has missed at least one match due to an injury case or illness.

And the scene is repeated at RCD Espanyol, because coach Mauricio Pochettino has faced the same plague of injuries. Until this point only four players have been available for all the official games on the season: strikers Luis García, José Callejón, Álvaro Vázquez and defender Dídac Vilà, and to mention that the last one was already sold during the winter window (to AC Milan for four million Euros).

The rest of players have at least missed a game after sustaining an injury; actually there are four men that have needed a surgery process: central defenders Felipe Mattioni (knee), Ernesto Galán (meniscus), striker Daniel Osvaldo (adductor muscle) and midfielder Juan Forlín (hand fracture).

And that’s not the end of the list, because there are other two players that recently suffered a serious injury and are close to pass through the surgery room: midfielder Jesus Datolo (ankle) and striker Sergio Garcia (shoulder luxation). The first will be operated today, while the second is waiting to schedule his surgery.

If that’s not enough, veteran Iván De La Peña hasn’t played any game on this season due to all kind of physical problems, midfielder Raúl Baena and striker Ivan Alonso (both muscular) have been out within the last three weeks, ex-Depor playmaker Joan Verdú has been dragging a quadriceps injury that forced him to be replaced during the past game against Levante, while on this week defender Jordi Amat (knock on the foot) and second keeper Cristian Álvarez (toe) haven’t trained at the top.

The situation was so dramatic that on the past Sunday, in the liga match against UD Levante, Pochettino had to use five players from the youth teams throughout the encounter. One of them was central defender Víctor Álvarez from Juvenil A, who even got injured on Thursday’s training as he suffered a knock on the thigh (Vastus lateralis muscle). This desperate situation clearly explains why Espanyol is falling down after a great first round in la liga as the Catalan team has lost six of its last seven games in the competition.

At least, and finally, there’s a light at the end of the tunnel as it has been announced that four of this long list of casualties will be available to face Deportivo: Osvaldo, Javi Márquez, Baena and Forlín. Which are pretty good news for Pochettino as this quartet was part of the starting lineup at the beginning of the season.

Still, it is expected that Pochettino will have five casualties for the game against Deportivo. Four of them caused by the injuries (Mattioni, Datolo, Sergio Garcia and De La Peña), while the fifth one is defender Jordi Amat, who is suspended after picking the fifth yellow card on the season.
