FIVE MORE POINTS

10 May 2011
For the first time in six months Deportivo is living inside the relegation zone; with three matchdays remaining in the calendar the alarm bells are ringing in La Coruña, but Lotina’s team controls its destiny, though it needs to add five of the last nine points in dispute.

The last two weeks have been twisted for Deportivo; the Galician team was seeing itself almost saved after the 2-0 win over Racing Santander three weeks ago. But the failures in the last three games plus the surprising results at other stadiums are breaking all the expectations.

And it’s that Malaga CF has added three straight wins, while Real Zaragoza, Osasuna and Racing Santander have collected six of the last nine points in dispute. Among the teams at the bottom only Getafe (3), Hércules (3), Deportivo (1) and UD Almeria (0) have added lesser points in the period.

As result of this Almeria is already relegated, Hércules has one-and-a-half foot at Segunda as the Valencian clubs is six points behind the safety with only nine points still in dispute, while Depor is inside the relegation zone for the first time since October of 2010. Also, it’s the first time since 1973 in which Deportivo is inside the relegation with only three games remaining in the calendar, that’s the year of the last relegation to Segunda.

The current situation at the bottom of la liga:

Now, everybody is talking of the mark of the 43 points; in 80 years of history at Primera División nobody has been relegated after clinching this tally of points. And despite the current form of some teams struggling to survive, it isn’t clear yet if this year things will change as there are a few direct confrontations within the last three matchdays.

Currently, eight teams haven’t reached the mark of the 43 points, and among this group there are three direct confrontations within the last three games on the schedule: Real Sociedad Vs. Zaragoza (matchday 36), Getafe Vs. Osasuna (matchday 37)  and Real Sociedad Vs. Getafe (matchday 38).

It is impossible to know if Deportivo will be saved reaching the mark of the 43 points, because of all the possible combinations, actually the four teams that currently have 43 points aren’t saved yet (Sporting, Levante, Mallorca and Racing), but Deportivo should be aware that its target is to at least add five more points, which means to end the season with 44.

This mark is necessary, because the Galicians have lost the direct series with Real Sociedad, Real Zaragoza and Getafe, while the series with Osasuna is tied, but the Galicians have a worse goal difference (-14 against -1 for the Navarrans).

The nest way to clarify the picture is the probabilities. Theirs is a 100% chance to achieve the permanence if Depor adds the nine points still in dispute (Athletic, Barca & Valencia). The probability is 95% If Depor adds seven points, 88% with six and 70% with five. Anything below the five-point mark means a lower percentage to the 50%
