THE CASE OF GUARDADO

14 Jun 2011
Andrés Guardado is on vogue on these days thanks to his performance in the CONCACAF Gold Cup; something that’s pleasing Lendoiro as is rising the price of the player. It’s almost a fact that he is leaving during the summer.

The relegation of Deportivo to Segunda should cause a long list of exits ahead of next season, but so far only the players that are ending contract in June 30 are passing through the door; and it’s that the club hasn’t cancelled the contract of anyone and neither has sold any player. Lendoiro was clear about this issue as he said on the past week that he won’t sell his assets at any price.

But if there’s a candidate to leave is Andrés Guardado; Depor paid €7 million for him in 2007 and is ending contract in 2012; besides the Mexican is right now the main asset of the club, at least the most famous one. Lendoiro said that he has offered the renewal to him, and if he doesn’t accept it then the player will be sold now.

So far the clubs that have shown interest are SL Benfica and Sporting Clube de Portugal; even Lendoiro has admitted to have received an offer coming from Portugal, while it is commenting that Valencia CF is following carefully the developments with Guardado.

It is hard to establish a target price, because it depends on the decision of the player toward his renewal; if he doesn’t accept it then the price will be lower, while if he signs the extension of contract then Lendoiro will have mo0re room to negotiate and it could even be possible to keep the player at Segunda, though this is a remote possibility as the agent of the winger, Raul Ordiales, already said to reporters that he doesn’t want to play at Segunda.

In a general sense, the media in Spain speculates that Lendoiro wants to recollect €8 million with the left winger, it seems a complicate operation for a club recently relegated to Liga Adelante, but the performance of the player in the CONCACAF Gold Cup is helping to exhibit him to potential buyers.

Mexico has crushed the competence as in three games it has scored fourteen goals and it has only allowed one; against El Salvador Guardado played 74 minutes giving two assist for a 5-0 win; three days later he completed 66 minutes and gave another assist for a new 5-0 victory, this time over Cuba, and on Sunday the winger played the full ninety minutes and completed his best game in the tournament scoring twice in the 4-1 triumph over Costa Rica; the first goal was even considered as the best one scored in this competition.

After the game against Costa Rica, Guardado told to Sportpaper Record that, “I am happy because it is one of those nights that you dream and expect; and the important thing is that the team won and ended first; now we must follow the same direction. Through my head it isn’t passing the idea of just scoring goals in order to stay in Europe, actually it’s the opposite, because I want to play well and score some goals so we can win the tournament, later we will see what happens with my future, which isn’t worrying me right now.”

Mexico is now waiting for a rival in the second round and is the favourite team to clinch the title; the North American country still has to play the Copa America in one month, but Guardado won’t be picked for the competition as the squad that will compete there is a U-22 team.

Anyway, Lendoiro expects to meet succulent offers, but neither will be a surprise if this operation last the whole summer as it happened before with Makaay, Coloccini or Luque. After all, Depor’s boss is an expert in these kinds of negotiations.
