Great presentation of a Deportivo that this time showed some punch in attack, but that lacked precision at defense. Valerón changed the match as he entered in the second half to lead the victory for the Galicians.

The big news was that neither coach José Luis Oltra nor assistant Chema Sanz were able to sit on the bench due to a conflict with Canarian club Vecindario. Both men were at the stands and physical trainer Miguel Ángel Fraganillo was the one giving the instructions to the players.

The lineup was also a big novelty, there were seven casualties due to injury reasons, and Ze Castro was the last addition to this list due to gastroenteritis. In the end the starting eleven was composed by six players that have passed through Deportivo B. German Lux was making his official debut at the goal, Laure was playing at the right-back position, Ayoze was on the left and the central defenders were Rochela and Aythami.

Ex-Fabril’s couple Alex Bergantiños-Juan Dominguez were the two centre midfielders, Saul covered the right wing, Diogo Salomão was on the left, Juan Carlos Real was making his first appearance in an official competition performing as the playmaker in the scheme, while Lassad was the central attacker.

At Girona, coach Raul Agné, was presenting the formation that he announced on the day before, with former Depor goalie Dani Mallo at the visiting goal, while the references in attack were Gaizka Saizar, Dani Nieto and Ion Vélez.

Entertaining and crazy first half between two teams that were always looking for the victory; Deportivo was having the ball possession and the bigger number of opportunities, but the lack of coordination at defense made things easier for Girona, a team that was pretty active in attack and that only missed to score more goals due to the lack of aim of its attackers.

Things started twisted for Deportivo, in the first action< b>Dani Nieto attempted to score after a distraction of the defense, and Rochela cleared the ball to corner-kick, but in the next play the former player of Fabril committed a huge mistake losing the ball against the pressure of Nieto, who regained the ball to end beating Lux with a drilling shot.

Depor was looking nervous, but the reaction of the Galician team was solid. The Fabril’s trio at midfield composed by Álex Bergantiños, Juan Carlos and Juan Dominguez was imposing their presence and soon the Galician started to create problems to Dani Mallo.

At the eighth minute Alex attempted with a shot from long-distance and the ball hit the post, and then Depor scored the equalizer. It was a great combination between Juan Carlos and Juan Dominguez that ended with a cross of Laure that Lassad Nouioui sent to the back of the net to conquer his first official goal on the season. Totally, four former players of Depor B participated in the play, a good way to cure the plague of injuries.

The rest of the first half was an exchange of blows, Deportivo had the ball possession and was having good opportunities to claim the lead, but at the same time its defense, together with the midfielders, were leaving big doubts as every attack of Girona was looking pretty dangerous, reason why the game had a lot of ups and downs and therefore it turned to be entertaining.

At minute 15, Lassad was close to score again, but this time his shot was cleared by Dani Mallo, one minute later Salomão attempted from long-distance and again the visiting keeper made the save. At the other side, Ion Vélez, and mainly < b>Dani Nieto, were giving a lot of problems against a defensive line that was looking distracted.

Saul was close to score at minute 26 as he tried to chip the ball into the net, but the visiting defense cleared the danger, in the next play Ion Vélez led a counterattack that ended with Lux making the save.  At minute 37 a new distraction of Depor’s defense allowed Gaizka Saizar to enter into the area and the Basque attacker missed the target.

Then Salomão made his own show with a long play in which he eluded four rivals, but his final shot hit the net by the outside. In the next play a new error of the defense, this time committed by Aythami, allowed Nieto to lead a counterattack that didn’t end in goal as Laure made the final block. In the end the 1-1 in the scoresheet after 45 minutes could perfectly have reflected a 4-4 result.

The final part was the climax of what turned to be a weird and exciting game; things were looking equal at the start and it was until the entrance of Valerón that the tide was favourable to Deportivo. His two assists guided a Depor that scored four goals in sixteen minutes to pass the round in Copa Del Rey.

But the second half started as the first ended: with Depor pushing in attack and with Girona seizing the errors at defense. First, Lux intercepted a pass of Nieto to Saizar and the Galicians responded with a long-range shot that missed the target (47’).

Just one minute later Ion Vélez was close to seize a new crack at Depor’s defense, but he was unable to define a one-on-one play against Lux, and in the next play Juan Carlos missed the target from the edge of the area. In resume, four scoring opportunities in a matter of four minutes, two for each side.

The game was so strange at this point, with multiple opportunities for both sides, that even Laure was close to score through a shot that gave a lot of problems to Dani Mallo (53’). After this frantic start, both sides were more calmed and were more worried in having the ball possession. Then Oltra ordered the first modification as Valerón entered for Juan Dominguez. The modification delayed the position of Juan Carlos Real, which opened a space for Valerón, and it was the decisive move.

Because El Flaco just lasted two minutes in marking his territory; he got the ball at midfield and made a wonderful pass to leave Lassad alone against the opposite goal, and the Tunisian attacker scored the goal with a crossed and drilling shot pass Dani Mallo.

At minute 67, Valerón appeared again to assist Salomão, and this time Dani Mallo cleared the attempt. But the former Depor’s goalie was unable to stop the third goal, again scored by Lassad, who seized a combination between Salomão and Valerón to score his hat-trick with a strong shot looking for the upper corner of the goal.

After the third goal, Girona surrendered and the Riazor became a party as the goals were coming from every corner. Then Guardado replaced Saul. At minute 73, Juan Carlos assisted Salomão and the Portuguese ran freely on the left wing to end releasing a drilling cross searching for Lassad, but the ball was deflected first by José Martinez to score an own goal.

The fifth goal just lasted seven minutes, Guardado found the ball at midfield and he drilled a perfect pass that left Salomão alone against Dani Mallo, and the Portuguese winger scored his first official goal at Depor drilling the ball under the body of the keeper. After the goal Oltra even had time to give a chance to Bodipo, who entered for Lassad  and he performed within the last eight minutes, and the Equatoguinean attacker had the last chance of the game, but he couldn’t define the play when he was inside the area (90+1’).

It was a game with different stories; Depor finally showed the passing style that Oltra wants, though the team also showed its miseries at defense against a brave rival that was looking for the victory. The entrance of Valerón changed everything as he gave two assists to lead Deportivo to the third round in Copa Del Rey.

To mention that Lassad’s hat-trick represent the first one at Depor since Adrian did it on the past season against Córdoba, also for Copa Del Rey. (3-1 Jan 05, 2011). It’s also the first time in two and a half years in which the Galician scores five goals in one single match. The previous occasion was the 5-3 over Racing Santander (07/March/2009). Now Depor returns to the Segunda competition as on Sunday it will pay its first visit of the season: at Barcelona B (Sunday, Mini Stadi, 20h00 CET)
