Squad news

12 Oct 2011
Rotations; only seven of the twenty-two men that were at El Collao on the past Saturday will play the Copa clash at the Riazor. Oltra was hoping to change the whole squad, but the injuries are modifying his plans.

Six time in which Deportivo faces the same rival in straight matches and playing for two different competitions. The Galicians have had mixed results in these kinds of series. In January of 1992 Depor eliminated Osasuna from Copa (1-0), and three days later it was achieving a 0-0 draw at the Riazor against the Navarrans. In the next round of Copa, Deportivo trashed Sevilla in the second-leg of the series (3-1), and in the next week, playing for la liga, it clinched a 0-0 draw at the Sánchez Pizjuán.

Then, on the season 1998/99, Depor defeated Celta at the Riazor playing for la liga (2-1), and three days later it was achieving a 1-1 draw in Copa playing at the same stadium and against the same rival, which was enough to clinch the pass as Deportivo won the first-leg at Balaidos (1-0). However, the last two experiences in these kinds of meetings had been negative. On the season 2001/02, the Galicians barely eliminated Real Valladolid in Copa in a two-leg series (aggregate 3-2), but in the middle of both legs Irureta’s Depor was trashed at the José Zorilla stadium playing for la liga (0-3).

And the last time in which Depor faced the same rival in straight matches playing for different competitions was on the season 2009/10; and again was a negative experience as Deportivo lost three consecutive games against Sevilla CF. In Copa, Depor was wiped off by the Andalusians with a 1-5 aggregate score, which included a 0-3 setback at the Riazor, and in the middle of both legs Lotina’s team lost 1-3 at home playing for la liga and despite the rival had one less man since minute 44.

This is the third time in which Deportivo La Coruña meets CD Alcoyano playing for Copa Del Rey; on the season 1982/83 Depor eliminated the Valencian club in the fourth round of the competition . It was a dramatic series in which the Galicians lost the first-leg 1-3 and turned the tie upside down with a 3-0 win in the second match played at the Riazor (aggregate 4-3).  And in the second opportunity Alcoyano got its revenge eliminating the Galicians in the third round of the season 1986/87; this time it was a one-leg series disputed at El Collao stadium (3-0).

Oltra will change the half of the squad that lost in liga against Alcoyano; the Valencian trainer announced that he will make a maximum of six modifications to the starting lineup; he was hoping to change the entire squad, but the injuries aren’t allowing him to rest some men. And it’s that six players are staying at the injury room: Manuel Pablo, Bruno Gama, Borja Fernandez, Xisco, Bodipo and Pablo Álvarez, while Guardado was concentrated with Mexico’s national team.

Actually, the only available player that wasn’t called for the clash is central defender Aythami Artiles, the Canarian is one of the two men that have started in all the seven liga matches played so far plus the Copa clash with Girona –the other is Ayoze- Now he will be rested and has been replaced by Juan Carlos Real in the list of picked players, the playmaker of Fabril was scoring a goal and giving an assist with Depor B during the past weekend, now is going directly into the starting eleven replacing Valerón.

There are doubts on the six changes that Oltra is planning to do, but two of the modifications are fixed: goalkeeper German Lux returns to the goal and will play for the second time wearing Depor’s shirt, and the other is Portuguese Ze Castro, who is claiming the spot of Aythami at the centre of the defense.

The other four changes are uncertain and depend on Oltra’s decisions regarding on the players that need a rest at this point of the season. The most probable thing is that three of the six changes are taking place at defense, Lux will be at the goal; Diego Seoane could keep playing at the right-back position, Colotto won’t be rested as he already missed a game due to suspension, the Argentine will be the partner of Ze Castro at the centre of the defense.

But the defender that will probably be rested is Ayoze Diaz, as it was said before the Canarian has been a starter in all the games disputed so far and his place at the left side of the defense should be for Paraguayan Claudio Morel. Juan Dominguez should be the fourth change as the youngster will probably claim the spot of Álex Bergantiños, this last midfielder has played all the possible minutes in liga and certainly needs a rest.

Jesús Vázquez will be the other pivote in the formation, this no matter that the ex-Recreativo man has played in all the seven liga matches played so far; he was only out for the Copa clash with Girona. The fifth modification should be the return of Saul Fernandez, who has only played 93 minutes in liga due to his injuries; he should be covering the right wing.

Diogo Salomão certainly needs a rest after playing as starter in six of the seven Segunda meetings, plus in the Copa match of the past round, but since Guardado is out the Portuguese will stay at the left wing. The final expected change is the entry of youngster Juan Carlos Real for Valerón, El Flaco is one of the six players at the team that have been starters in all the liga confrontations.

Finally, Lassad Nouioui will keep playing at the centre of the attack; the Tunisian is one of the two available attackers for the meeting, and with Riki just coming out from his injury, it is pretty clear that the Madrilenian won’t be risked, though the ex-Getafe man will probably have some minutes in the second part.

Aythami, who is rested for this game, talked before the meeting and was asking for an additional effort after the disappointing loss at El Collao, ”We must be more demanding and must be aware of what we do right and wrong; especially what we are doing wrong in order to correct the issues. The team must keep improving, because if not we won’t achieve the goals for the season.”

Meanwhile, Álex Bergantiños was trying to remain calmed, ”We are hurt for the result, but neither is to torment ourselves. We didn’t make a great game, but wasn’t the same show of Alcorcón. Yes, the first two plays were unfortunate for us, but later the team had the ball possession. Maybe we missed more depth to create more opportunities, but if we would have scored n any of the two or three chances that we had, then things would have looked differently. We must improve, but without alarming anyone.”

Finally, Juan Dominguez said that he will try to seize this opportunity, ”It’s a great chance to add minutes, also to gain pace and especially to enjoy. In Copa the coach is putting players that aren’t regulars in la liga, and that’s good in order to pass the rounds and have more minutes. We’ve a clear picture of our style of playing, which is something practiced since the pre-season. Little by little we are improving and that’s the path to follow. We are fine at home, but need to improve away from our stadium.”

List of picked players (18): Aranzubia, Lux (goalkeepers); Laure, Seoane, Rochela, Colotto, Ze Castro, Morel, Ayoze (defenders); Jesús Vázquez, Álex Bergantiños, Juan Dominguez, Juan Carlos, Valerón, Saúl Fernandez, Salomão (midfielders); Lassad and Riki (strikers)

Coach David Porras has said that he’s targeting to pass the round in Copa Del Rey, but it’s pretty clear that his main goal is the league competition as the Valencian coach is planning nine modifications to the lineup that surprised Deportivo on the past weekend. He is even traveling to La Coruña with a player from his Juvenil A squad – playmaker Lucas Torró-

Actually, only two of the expected starters for the match have been regular starters during the first seven liga matches: left-back Jorge Devesa and central defender Fernando Martin. There are even four players that haven’t debuted yet in liga: keeper Francisco Ramón Dorronsoro, central defender Jorge Rojas, left-back Daniel Fernández and midfielder Francesc Xavier Molina.

To have in mind that central defender Jorge Morillo and midfielder César Remón are suspended after been sent off in the past Copa match with Hércules, while captain Manuel Carrión has been picked for the first time in five months after suffering a muscular injury. Striker Francisco Esteban is also part of the list after surpassing his injury, also attacker Raúl Iván Fabiani is returning from a muscular injury. The list of picked players includes the presence of Alcoyano B striker Diego Vicedo.

The expected formation is a 4-4-2 draw; with Dorronsoro at the goal; Jorge Rojas and Fernando Martin  playing at the centre of the defense, Jorge Devesa will switch to the right-back position and Daniel Fernandez will play on the left side.

At midfield, Xavi Molina and Fran Miranda will be the pivotes, while Guile Roldán and Omar Monterde will attack from the flanks. Finally, the two attackers will be Roberto Batres and Manuel Gato, this duo was the same one that build up the counterattack that ended in the second goal of Alcoyano on the past Saturday.

Keeper Dorronsoro was talking before the meeting, ”We are going to La Coruña in the attempt to pass the round. Players like me are interested in advancing as it’s an incentive in order to not lower the arms and train each day at the top.”

List of picked players: (20) Maestro, Dorronsoro (goalkeepers); Fernando Martín, Carrión, Rojas, Devesa, Dani Fernández (defenders); Xavi Molina, , Diego Jiménez, Omar, Fran Miranda, Roldán, Paco Esteban, Lucas (midfielders); Rafa Gómez, Choco Lozano, Batres, Gato, Fabiani and Diego Vicedo (strikers)
