Depor only needed fifteen minutes of offensive football to clinch the three points; Oltra’s team scored the goal and later spent the time protecting the result. Seventh straight win and Deportivo still commanding Segunda División.

Coach José Luis Oltra was presenting the expected formation, with Claudio Morel, Aythami Artiles and Diogo Salomão as the main novelties in the 4-2-3-1 formation. Also, Valerón stayed at the starting eleven, leaving Borja on the bench.

Dani Aranzubia was defending the goal, Laure covered the right-back position, Morel was at the left side, while Aythami Artiles was joining Diego Colotto at the centre of the defense. Juan Dominguez and Álex Bergantiños were the two pivotes, Guardado attacked from the right wing, Salomão did it on the left, Valerón was the playmaker and Riki the central attacker.

At Recreativo, the main novelty at the team coached by Álvaro Cervera was the presence of winger Javi Álamo; he was doubtful throughout the week and passed a late test, therefore he was a starter. The other references in attack were Fidel Chaves de la Torre and Pablo Sánchez. It was a cold day in Spain –and Europe- the temperature in Huelva was 7 degrees Celsius

Solid first part of a Deportivo that dominated the actions at the beginning and until scoring the goal, then it spent the time waiting at the back, but in this opportunity without too much suffering as it was blocking all the roads to Aranzubia’s goal. Recre was too shy and only pushed after allowing the goal of Valerón.

The first minutes were highly disputed, with both sides trying to get the ball possession, but soon Deportivo gained the control over the actions; the first approximation on the game was for the visitors, with a long-range shot of Colotto that was stopped by Manu (4’). Two minutes later Riki made a solid play on the left wing and the Madrilenian attempted a shot on target that was stopped by the former goalie of Deportivo.

Depor felt pretty comfortable on the pitch and soon it claimed the ball possession, while the locals seemed content holding at the back and waiting for a counterattack. At minute 11, Riki stole the ball at the edge of the area, and the Madrilenian attempted to score with a high shot that went wide.

And soon Depor found the goal; Morel released a high and perfect cross from the left, Riki headed the ball on target from the six-yard-box, Manu made the save, but Juan Carlos Valerón found the loose ball and only needed to push it in. It’s the second goal in liga for El Flaco.

The goal shacked Recreativo and the Andalusians were trying to gain the ball possession, in this sense the locals had their first attempt, Pablo Sánchez found the ball at the area when he was backwards the goal; he attempted a scissors-kick that hit the body of Aranzubia and then it hit the post, but the referee invalidated the play for an offside (18’).

Depor reacted with a corner of Guardado that Colotto found at the far post, but his attempt went wide. (22’). One minute later Recreativo had a clear opportunity to tie the actions; it was a quick attack in which the locals had three chances to shot on target, but Morel and Aranzubia made the saves. It was going to be the clearest opportunity for El Decano in the whole game.

The true is that there were big doubts with the return of Aythami and Morel to the defense, two men that were missing minutes and credibility, but in the end both completed a solid game; actually they were the players with more steals on the game (Morel 19, Aythami 18).

At minute 29, Riki attempted from long-range, but he missed the target. Depor was now playing trying to protect the result, locked at the back zone, while the Andalusians were having the initiative, though they had big problems trying to break the deadlock of the visitors.

Their only attempt before the pause was a free-kick action that was headed by Fidel, but Aranzubia was there to make the save (42’). The last attack of Depor in the first part was a free-kick of Guardado that was stopped by Manu (45’).

Depor spent the second part protecting the advantage, contrary to previous matches the Galicians didn’t suffer too much, mainly because Recreativo never found any crack at a defensive line that, despite the casualties, it was pretty strong. Oltra’s side had a couple of clear chances through counterattacks, but it was unable to increase the lead.

The final part started with Recreativo pushing in attack, at minute 47 Fidel attempted a shot from the left side of the area, but Aranzubia was there to stop the shot. The script was the same of the first half: Deportivo locked at the back, waiting for a counterattack or a set-piece to reply, while the locals were trying to have the ball possession, but they were having big problems to break the visitor’s deadlock.

At minute 57, Pablo Sánchez had a great chance to tie the actions as he found the ball at the edge of the area, but his crossed shot missed the target. With the pass of the minutes the pressure of the Andalusians became bigger, that’s why Oltra decided to put more mark at midfield, in this sense Borja Fernandez entered for Valerón.

At the middle of the half Depor had three straight opportunities in counterattacks, the clearest one was a cross of Guardado sending the ball into the path of Riki, who headed the ball at the six-yard box, but his attempt just passed close to the crossbar (64’).

Recreativo continued pushing in attack and at minute 70, Fidel released a free-kick that Aranzubia cleared with the fists. Then Riki missed a clearest chance to define the game, he collected a pass of Colotto and the Madrilenian ran 40 meters to face Manu one-on-one, but he couldn’t define the play and Manu got the ball after it hit his face (73’).

At minute 74, Álex Bergantiños found the ball at the edge of the area, but his drilling shot was stopped by Manu.  Then Oltra made his final two substitutions allowing the entries of Xisco and Jesús Vázquez; they replaced Riki and Salomão.

Depor’s attackers and wingers were on fire in recent games, but in this opportunity they lacked aim; Guardado was pretty active in the match, but not so much as in previous opportunities. Salomão was also appearing from time to time, but never made a decisive play. Riki missed too many chances and Xisco barely touched the ball. So, the best in the game was the performance of the defense; solid and only committing a few errors.

It seemed that Depor was going to suffer within the final ten minutes, but the true is that Recreativo never found the way to break Oltra’s deadlock, actually it was Deportivo the side closer to score as a cross of Jesús Vázquez was headed at the area by Guardado, but the Mexican missed the target (82’)

An efficient and ordered Deportivo clinched the seventh straight victory at the Nuevo Colombino stadium; this time Depor missed spark in attack, but the solid effort of the defensive line and the midfielders was worth the three points. And it’s that Deportivo’s defense, despite the casualties, made a great match, never giving room to Recre’s attackers.

It’s the third time in which Depor clinches seven wins in a row; in the previous two opportunities it ended clinching the title (99/00 at Primera and 63/64 at Segunda). Also, the Galician team added its fourth straight clean sheet playing away from home; the last time this happened was in: 1993. At the time Depor clinched five (Sporting, Sevilla, Albacete, Zaragoza and Valladolid). On next Sunday Depor visits Hércules CF (12h00 CET). For that game Laure is suspended after picking his fifth yellow card of the season.
