MATCHDAY 38: EARTHQUAKE AT SEGUNDA DIVISION

15 May 2012
RC Celta regained the second spot, while the relegation of Villarreal at Primera División is changing the whole map as now only the last three spots will go down to Segunda B. What didn’t change is the march of Depor towards Primera.

Deportivo returned to winning ways and clinched a refreshing victory in Soria against CD Numancia (3-0); Los Blanquiazules are each day closer to Primera División and also to the championship at Liga Adelante 2011/12. The weekend turned to be perfect for Galicia as RC Celta regained the second spot after the failure of Real Valladolid.

The club from Vigo also clinched a 3-0 win, though the success was at home facing playoff aspirant AD Alcorcón. The result cut the undefeated streak of the Madrilenians (7) Meanwhile, Real Valladolid dropped two points after allowing a last-minute goal at home playing against fourth place Hércules CF (1-1); ironically the equalizer was an own goal of Manucho, the same player that scored the equalizer at the Riazor just one week before.

Córdoba CF is another winner on the weekend after clinching a 4-2 win over relegation-troubled Gimnástic de Tarragona. The Andalusians seized a new fatal match of their neighbors UD Almeria, side that was surprised at home by Barcelona B (1-2). Elche CF also failed after dropping two points at home playing against CE Sabadell (1-1).

Depor is now caressing Primera División; Oltra’s team has a seven-point gap over both RC Celta and Real Valladolid, they will clinch the promotion if the chasers lose one of the next two games plus seeing Los Blanquiazules adding the three points in the next two games against UD Las Palmas and CD Xérez. In the worst case scenario Deportivo will need to win three of the last five games in the competition in order to secure the golden ticket to Primera.

RC Celta and Real Valladolid will probably fight until the final matchday in order to avoid the playoffs and join the fast road to Primera. At this point the other three tickets for the playoffs mean a fight between four clubs: Hércules CF, AD Alcorcón, Córdoba CF and UD Almeria. Elche CF, side that was the leader in the league at the end of 2011, is now seven points behind the promotion zone and they are practically out of the race.

But the biggest earthquake on the weekend came at the bottom of the standings, the surprising relegation of Villarreal CF at Liga BBVA is changing the entire picture as it’s pulling down Villarreal B to Segunda División B.  Now only the last three places in the league are going down, and the big winner is Girona FC, side that, without playing, passed from being two points behind the safety to have a mattress of four points over relegation.

The Catalans are now out of relegation for the first time since matchday 06 (September 25); still they deserve this reward, because they have been undefeated within the last five matchdays, clinching three wins in the period, including the latest  5-1 victory over direct rival CD Alcoyano, their biggest win on the season.

Villarreal’s relegation also brought fresh air to CD Guadalajara, the other Depor had been suffering within this last part of the season and now has a six-point gap over the pit, just when on Saturday they were just two points above relegation.

FC Cartagena also believes in the miracle of the salvation after clinching an important 2-1 win visiting UD Las Palmas, The Murcians are now only five points below the safety. The side that seems indifferent is Gimnástic de Tarragona, because the Catalans are nine points behind Girona FC, with only fifteen points in dispute they are practically condemn.

MATCHDAY 39: MIDWEEK DRAMA
The busiest part of the Segunda season is just starting; today RC Celta will try to hold on the second place as it visits a CD Guadalajara that breaths more calmly, but that can’t relax. Leaders Deportivo host UD Las Palmas, Canarian team that’s already playing for nothing. More difficult is the visit of third place Real Valladolid to ninth position Barcelona B.

Fourth spot Hércules CF is having an accessible meeting hosting CD Numancia, while fifth place AD Alcorcón face a final as Elche CF visits the Santo Domingo stadium; it’s the last call for the Valencians in order to find the road back to the playoff zone.  Sixth position Córdoba CF has an accessible visit to RC Recreativo, same thing than seventh place UD Almeria; the Andalusians visit CE Sabadell.

The drama continues at the bottom; now saved club Girona FC plays a mini Catalan derby hosting Gimnástic de Tarragona, a final for both clubs, especially for Nástic. 20th place CD Alcoyano will try to put Real Murcia inside the fight for survival, and finally FC Cartagena will try to chain three straight victories for the first time on the season as they host Xérez CD.
