Deportivo has secured the arrival of winger/playmaker Pizzi. The Portuguese player passed the medicals on Thursday and later was presented at the Riazor. He’s arriving loaned from Atletico Madrid; the operation is lasting one season.

Luís Miguel Afonso Fernandes ´Pizzi (22) is the second signing of Deportivo ahead of the season 2012/13.  The operation was announced on Thursday, the day before he arrived to La Coruña and passed the medicals on Thursday’s morning. In the afternoon he was presented at the Riazor in front of 500 fans. For now he’s the fifth Portuguese player at Depor’s first team after Ze Castro, Bruno Gama, Salomão and André Santos.

The winger/playmaker is arriving to La Coruña loaned for one season; it’s a complex operation as he belongs to Braga SC, but he was loaned to Atletico Madrid for the second straight year and Los Colchoneros loaned him out to Deportivo. He won’t be able to face the Madrilenian outfit in any of the two league matches on the season 2012/13.

Pizzi is a right-footed winger that usually performs on the left, though he can also play as a playmaker/second striker. It gives the impression that this was a quick signing as it was closed in one day, but the true is that Deportivo has been chasing the player since some months ago and the operation was closed until this week and is part of the so called “Banana operation”.

The Portuguese player belongs to SC Braga and has spent the last four years loaned at other clubs (Ribeirão, Covilhã, Paços Ferreira and Atletico de Madrid). It was at Paços Ferreira that he shoe after playing 42 matches scoring eight times in the Portuguese league (2011/12), it was even rumoured that he was going to be picked for the UEFA Euro 2012.

But then his club made a bad call as it decided to loan him out to Atletico Madrid, club where he only completed two appearances at Primera División during the past season. Now he hopes to have more chances at Deportivo.

Pizzi during his presentation at the Riazor

During the presentation president Lendoiro admitted that the club was chasing the player since some months ago, “We spent a lot of time trying to reach an agreement with both Atletico Madrid and the player. There were many teams interested. We can say that he’s replacing Guardado. We are hopeful of his possible performance. Last year he didn’t have too many opportunities.”

Then Pizzi talked with reporters and explained why he chose to sign for Deportivo, “It’s a club with a big history and besides the team has quality. I was very happy when I met the interest of the club. I talked with Filipe [Luis] and he spoke greatly of the club, the fans and the people. It can be said that he was a big factor in order to choose Depor.”

He also explained his characteristics as a player, “I like to play on the left wing, or to perform behind the striker. I’m a fast player and like to face one-on-one situations. What I want is to give everything for the team. I hope to play more minutes than last season and help Depor to enjoy of a tranquil season.”
