Deportivo remains undefeated in liga, but dropped two valuable points at home in an electric game and facing a skillful Getafe. Riki scored his second goal on the liga season, while midfielder Andre Santos fulfilled his first minutes on the pitch.

Both coaches presented the expected lineups for the clash; Oltra was playing with the same 4-2-3-1 scheme of the first two matchdays. Aranzubia was at the goal, Manuel Pablo performed at the right-back position, Evaldo covered the left side, while the central positions at defense were for Aythami and Marchena.

Abel Aguilar and Juan Dominguez were the two centre midfielders, Bruno Gama was recovered from his hamstring problem and started at the right wing, Pizzi was performing on the left, Valerón was the playmaker in the scheme and Riki was the central attacker.

At Getafe, coach Luis Garcia was presenting the expected starting eleven; Miku went out loaned, so the starting striker was Adrián Colunga. New signing Álvaro Vázquez wasn’t picked for the match as his arrival was secured until Friday’s night, but Paco Alcácer was on the bench. Ex-Depor men Lafita and Lopo were starters in the game.

The first part was entertaining; with two teams trying to attack and score some goals; the ball was quickly passing through midfield; therefore both defensive lines were constantly pushed. Depor claimed an early lead, but Getafe managed the game perfectly, first pushing strong enough to score the equalizer and later holding on and relying on counterattacks.

Depor started strongly and pressing the defensive line of the visitors; at minute 3, Riki drilled a pass from the left after a corner-kick of Pizzi, but the ball was cleared by a rival. Getafe responded with a play of Pedro Leon, who surpassed Evaldo to release a cross that was headed by Xavi Torres, but the ball went wide (5’).

But Deportivo wasn’t intimidated and scored an early goal, again in set-pieces, this time in a free-kick. Pizzi was fouled at the edge of the area, then the Portuguese winger made a short pass assisting Riki, who ran a couple of meters to release a drilling shot that entered by the right-bottom corner of visiting goalie Miguel Ángel Moyá. It’s the fourth time in which the Madrilenian scores against his former club.

The first part was entertaining; the Galicians were quickly moving the ball over the grass and the Madrilenians were pushing and releasing quick attacks, manly searching for the side defended by Evaldo, though they were caught by surprise as Depor used the offside trap –Five within the first twenty minutes-

At minute 18, Getafe had a double opportunity; first Colunga was close to score with a shot from short-range, but Aranzubia cleared the danger. In the next play Pedro Leon fired from the edge of the area and his drilling attempt was hardly deflected by Depor’s goalie and later the ex-Athletic man cleared the danger again before the pressure of Colunga.

At the middle of the half, Getafe claimed the ball possession and started to surround the area of Deportivo, though the defense was holding on the narrow advantage…. until the whole defensive sector was surprised in a quick counterattack of the Madrilenians. Xavi Torres assisted Colunga, and the attacker released a quick and perfect pass from midfield past Juan Dominguez and Abel Aguilar allowing Abdelaziz Barrada to face Aranzubia one-on-one, then the playmaker scored his second goal on the season drilling the ball past the keeper.

Depor tried to responded and Riki fired from the edge of the area, though the ball was stopped by Moyá (28’); in the next play Pizzi fired a strong shot from the left corner of the area, and Getafe’s keeper cleared the ball to corner-kick. Getafe was also looking dangerous,  it changed it strategy after the equalizer as it was holding on at the back releasing quick counterattacks lead by Lafita, Barrada and Colunga.

The next big change for Deportivo came at minute 35, Riki made a solo-play at the centre eluding four rivals to end releasing a shot that was cleared out; in the resulting corner-kick the shot of Pizzi hit the back of Valera. Two minutes later the Portuguese winger attempted from long-range, but his drilling shot missed the goal. Alexis had the last scoring opportunity in this half as he headed wide a corner-kick of Pedro Leon (45’).

The pace of the game was slower in the second part; Depor had the ball possession, but it only completed one shot on target in this half. Getafe was a more defensive team and relied on the counterattack; in the end the second half ended without more goals and with the 1-1 on the scoresheet.

The second half started with Depor attacking and with Getafe having the first scoring opportunity; it was a counterattack in which Lafita chipped the ball over the whole defense, but Xavi Torres, who was alone at the far post, missed the goal from close range.

Camuñas was the first change as he replaced Bruno Gama, who wasn’t fine after the hamstring problem suffered on Thursday. And the ex-Villarreal man was close to score for Depor in his first appearance. It was a combinative play with Riki that ended with a strong shot from inside the area that was deflected by Moyá (52’)

In the next play Valerón drilled the ball from the left and after a series of rebounds the ball was cleared off. In this play the fans at the Riazor protested a penalty after a shot of Camuñas hit the hand of a defender.

The entry of Camuñas revitalized the attacking line of Deportivo as Oltra’s team was having more depth; Riki found his perfect partner, tough the Galician outfit was unable to complete more shots on target. The game was pretty fast and for this reason Depor’s trainer decided to switch the formation into a 4-4-2; this since Nélson Oliveira entered replacing Valerón. The Portuguese attacker was more erratic in this opportunity after his impressive debut against Osasuna.

At minute 67, Oliveira collected the ball at the edge of the area and assisted Pizzi, but the winger sent the ball wide. Three minutes later Abel Aguilar drilled a perfect pass from midfield leaving Riki alone before Moyá, and the keeper was quick enough to deflect the ball at the edge of the area and later he cleared the danger with his feet.

Then Oltra made the last substitution in the game as Andre Santos made his debut in liga replacing Juan Dominguez, but at this point in the game both teams were tired and missing aim, reason why there were no more shots on targets and therefore there were no more scoring opportunities.

Mixed feelings after the first draw of the season at the Riazor. Getafe was a tough rival that gave a lot of problems. The key was that the Madrilenians always managed the tempo of the match; first knowing to attack when they were losing and later defending and releasing counterattacks with the draw already on the scoresheet. The result was fair, though Deportivo left the impression that it dropped two points playing at home.

The Galicians are now reaching the pause due to international action with five of nine possible points already inside the pocket. La Liga returns for Depor on Sunday, September 16 as Oltra’s team visits Granada CF (16h00 CET).
