Oltra is having important casualties at defense and limited options in attack. In the end Deportivo travels to Madrid having six casualties. At Atletico, Simeone is resting his starters in Europe, while ex-Depor Filipe Luis is doubtful.

Deportivo is visiting Atletico Madrid on Sunday (Calderón stadium, 19h00 CET). A tough exam as the Madrilenians are the runners-up in la liga and one of the most in-form clubs in Spain, though they are arriving to the meeting after losing the Madrilenian derby.

Coach José Luis Oltra is having big problems at the centre of the defense. Ze Castro (Soleus) will be back until January, while Carlos Marchena (hamstring) has delayed his return and remains working on the sidelines. Besides, Aythami Artiles picked his fifth yellow card of the season against Real Betis and is suspended.

Therefore, Depor’s trainer only has one available centre-back at the first team: Roderick Miranda. The Valencian tactician will have to recall Pablo Insua from Deportivo B in order to fill the gaps. In the end Deportivo will face the team with the third best scoring record in la liga with a couple of rookies at the centre of the defense, duo that hasn’t played together in previous official games.

Oltra hasn’t called any other centre-back from Fabril for this week’s trainings, which is a sign that he will travel to Madrid without any backup. So, any injury will be covered with an improvised solution, mainly to replace Álex Bergantiños on that spot.

The coach also has limited resources for the attacking line; striker Nélson Oliveira (muscle injury) and right winger Saul Fernandez (thigh) remain out, while left winger Pizzi is unavailable for the meeting as Atletico Madrid is his parent club. There’s an option on his loan contract that will allow him to play, but it requires a payment that Deportivo won’t make.

These six casualties are decreasing the options in a team that urgently needs to react after only picking one point within the last three games. At least there is some good news: left winger Diogo Salomão is fully recovered from a Soleus injury and will probably have his first minutes after a month out.

At Atletico Madrid, the team played yesterday the last game in the UEFA Europa League group stage (against Czech club FC Viktoria Plzeň). The Madrilenian have already qualified to the knockout phase, so coach Diego Simeone rested half the starting squad for Sunday’s game in liga.

Centre-back Diego Godín, midfielders Gabi Fernández, Mario Suárez and Arda Turan, plus striker Radamel Falcao have been rested and will surely play against Deportivo. Simeone has a confirmed casualty for the meetings against the Galicians, its centre-back João Miranda de Souza, who’s suspended with five yellow cards.

There are also two doubtful players for Sunday. Ex-Depor left back Filipe Luis picked a muscle injury during the warming up of the match against Real Madrid and will hardly be fit for Sunday, while left winger Cristian ‘Cebolla’ Rodriguez is still recovering from a hamstring problem.

Finally, midfielder Emre Belözoglu was mysteriously ruled out of the match in the Europa League, and later on Thursday it was known that he could end in jail due to a racism abuse occurred early this year when he was playing for Fenerbahçe.
