MATCHDAY 15: DAY FOR THE RECORDS

12 Dec 2012
Sorrow for the bottom clubs at Primera División and joy for the leaders of la liga, mainly for Barcelona and Atlético Madrid, two teams that witnessed how their main stars were breaking some interesting records.

32 goals in a matchdays that turned to be the 5th in terms of more goals scored; combined the six clubs at the bottom were only able to pick up a point, and three of them suffered big defeats. Starting with Deportivo; for the fourth time on the season the Galicians were involved in the game with more goals in the matchday, it happened after they were humiliated by Atlético Madrid at the Calderón stadium (6-0).

The other two big losses had the same score. Firstly RCD Mallorca, Los Bermellones were destroyed by Levante UD (0-4) and remain close to the pit and with Joaquin Caparrós under pressure at the Balearic Islands. Granada CF, meanwhile, suffered the same score visiting Malaga CF. RCD Espanyol was the only side that added a point, though it was painful as they were defeating Sevilla CF only to allow a last-minute goal to end 2-2. Still, it was good enough to leave the last place. Depor are now the bottom club at Primera.

RC Celta suffered a new defeat on the road, this time visiting Athletic Bilbao (1-0). The team from Vigo is only four points above Deportivo. Finally, CA Osasuna was defeated at home by Valencia CF (0-1); the Navarrans are only one point above the drop zone.

FC Barcelona are now the only team among the big leagues in Europe that remain undefeated; the Catalans suffered a lot, but achieved a 2-1 win visiting Real Betis. Lionel Messi scored a brace and reached the astonishing mark of 86 goals on this year, which broke the old record of German Gerd Müller.

Atlético Madrid remain second at the standings thanks to the five goals of Radamel Falcao, who is now the only player of Atlético that has netted this number at Primera. He’s now second at the goal-scoring chart (16). Real Madrid suffered at the Zorilla stadium and had to come from behind twice in order to defeat Real Valladolid (2-3). The Madrilenians are third.

Malaga returned to the Champions League zone after their victory over Granada; Real Sociedad and Getafe drew in a game that left both teams unhappy and living at mid-table (1-1), while Real Zaragoza is now eight points over the pit after an important win visiting Rayo Vallecano (0-2)

MATCHDAY 16 & 17: DOUBLE HEADER
The last two matchdays in 2012 will be played in a matter of seven days. There are a couple of direct meetings among the teams living at the bottom. First Deportivo entertains Real Valladolid on Monday and three days later they visit RCD Espanyol in the first battle among clubs trying to survive. Two days later CA Osasuna is hosting Granada CF in another direct battle among teams fighting to escape relegation.

The club struggling to survive and that will have the toughest calendar is RC Celta; the Galicians play first in Copa Del Rey against Real Madrid, then on Monday they host a Real Betis that want to re-enter into the Champions League zone and end the year 2012 visiting Atlético Madrid.

Without doubt the main confrontation at the top of the standings is leaders FC Barcelona entertaining runners-up Atlético Madrid (Sunday).  The Catalans also have a tough ending as three days later they visit Real Valladolid. More accessible is the meeting of Real Madrid hosting RCD Espanyol, though three days later the Madrilenians must visit RCD Espanyol. These double header to end the year will probably change the entire picture at the standings.
