Squad news

15 Dec 2012
Last week of competition in 2012 for Deportivo; crucial moment that brings three events: the liga matches against Real Valladolid & RCD Espanyol, plus the shareholders meetings. Oltra is in the wire, but practically having a full squad available.

A lot of things at stake in a matter of five days, period of time in which Deportivo will play the last two liga matches of 2012, first hosting Real Valladolid at the Riazor (Monday, 20h00 CET) and then visiting RCD Espanyol at Cornellà-El Prat (Thursday, 22h00 CET), and to end up the week the shareholders meeting at Colegio Santa María del Mar in A Coruña (Friday, 20h00 CET).

Coach José Luis Oltra is under a lot pressure and it isn’t clear if he could be fired in case of suffering new defeats, but the point is that he has been boosted by the news that he has a full squad available for the double meeting on next week. The only player that’s currently out is right winger Saúl Fernandez (thigh).

The Asturian player is already working on the pitch, but he won’t be ready for the games against Real Valladolid & RCD Espanyol. Manuel Pablo skipped Friday’s training session due to gastroenteritis, but he should be available for Monday.

The boost is coming with the players going out from the injury room. Centre-backs Carlos Marchena (hamstring) and Ze Castro (Soleus), plus striker Nélson Oliveira (muscle) are training with the group since Monday and already received the medical okay.

Marchena delayed his return in two weeks as he wasn’t completely recovered, while Ze Castro and Oliveira are returning before the expectations. Besides, centre-back Aythami Artiles is back from suspension, while left winger Pizzi is available after been ineligible to play against Atletico Madrid. It means that Oltra has 25 players available for the double meeting. Enough resources as there are only three days separating both matches.

It has called the attention that on this week Oltra has emphasized the defensive work during the trainings, also the pressure and the outcome of the ball. The Valencian coach is known for not training the defensive tasks during the sessions, but he’s doing it now as Deportivo is the worst defense in the league with 37 goals allowed after 15 matchdays.

The first rival on next week is Real Valladolid, the team coached by Miroslav Djukic is facing a comfortable situation in la liga, being 8th and living closer to Europe than to relegation. But the present looks complicated; they were just defeated by Real Madrid (2-3) and after visiting the Riazor on Monday they are hosting the all-mighty FC Barcelona on next Saturday.

Djukic is having an important casualty for the game at the Riazor: winger Patrick Ebert. The German has been an important reference in attack and is out of the meeting due to a wrist fracture. Centre midfielder Jesús Rueda is also out with a knee problem sustained in the 2-1 win over Sevilla; he will return until January of 2013. Striker Manucho (flue) and centre midfielder Álvaro Rubio (knock) didn’t train on Wednesday, but the duo should be available for Monday’s match.

More serious is the situation of RCD Espanyol; the Catalans are no longer the last place, but just for the goal difference and they visit Real Madrid on Sunday, later they host Depor and debut in 2013 visiting FC Barcelona. New coach Javier Aguirre hasn’t been the solution after the departure of Mauricio Pochettino and barely grabbed two points from the previous two liga meetings.

It seems that goalkeeper Cristian Álvarez (hamstring) won’t be available for the trip to the Santiago Bernabéu, but he has options of been fit to play against Depor. Striker Christian Stuani is dragging a face fracture, but in the past game against Sevilla FC he was wearing a mask. Attacker Rui Fonte was having fever, but it’s expected that the Portuguese man will be available for the last two games in liga.

The busy week ends for Deportivo with the shareholders meeting, this year it will be more special due to the current situation in liga and the financial problems that are dragging the club to administration. It’s expected that president Lendoiro will explain the financial reports and will also offer the latest report on the state of the negotiations with the Treasury, a key aspect in order to avoid the bankruptcy. Despite the problems, it isn’t expected a big attendance of shareholders to the meeting.
