29 Dec 2012
Inconsistent month for Deportivo; the big proof of this is that Laure earned the player of the month award without been the best man in any game, just the runner-up twice. Abel Aguilar remains as the best player of the season.

If November was a grey month for Deportivo, then the last month of the year can safely be called Black December. After four official games, the Blanquiazul outfit only managed to record a single point (against Valladolid – Matchday 16). Worse was the fact that only two goals were scored (in the home defeat against Real Betis) and eleven were conceded, with the low point being the 6-0 thrashing at the Vicente Calderon stadium, the worst defeat in decades at the club.

It might be a bit of a surprise that the Player of the Month Award of December is for a defender: Laureano Sanabria ‘Laure’. But the true is that he gained points in 3 of the 4 games in the month and fully deserves the accolade. Curiously, Laure didn’t win any of the individual Man of the Match awards (MOM). Instead they went to Riki (Vs. Real Betis), Bruno Gama (at Atlético Madrid), German Lux (Vs. Real Valladolid) and Abel Aguilar (at RCD Espanyol). But his two second places and one third spot were enough in a very low-scoring month for the players.

It’s the second time in the history of the awards in which someone wins the Player of the Month designation without clinching any MOM. The previous opportunity this happened was in March of the present year as Valerón and Juan Dominguez shared it. Bruno Gama was the other big winner of December; the Portuguese winger earned a MOM and a second place, reason why he picked eight points in the month, just one less than Laure.

In the other hand, one negative record was equaled in December. As it happened against Levante UD on Matchday 12, four Deportivo players received negative points in the game against Atlético Madrid (Insua, Roderick, Camuñas & Riki). Riki also received negative marks in the home clash against Levante UD.
