MATCHDAY 20: DEPOR BACK AT THE BOTTOM

23 Jan 2013
Deportivo is once again the bottom club in la liga after a new defeat on the road, this time at the Reyno de Navarra; there are no changes at the top of the table, but FC Barcelona lost its first match on the liga campaign.

New disappointment for Deportivo La Coruña after suffering the tenth defeat on the season –six of them playing away from home- The most painful fact is that it occurred visiting a direct rival, CA Osasuna (2-1). Now the Galicians return to the bottom of the standings, while the Navarrans are just one point behind the safety.

Granada CF were the other big winner on the weekend after clinching a 2-0 win over Rayo Vallecano, their first win at home after four months. Now the Andalusians are two points above the drop zone. The other clubs fighting to avoid relegation had mixed results. RCD Mallorca was getting a valuable win visiting RCD Espanyol, but two goals within the last thirty minutes left the scoresheet in a 3-2 in favour of the Catalans.

RC Celta rescued a valuable point visiting Malaga CF (1-1), but still they are losing positions are now marking the frontier between Primera and Segunda. Athletic Bilbao also rescued a point on the road: 1-1 at Real Betis, but the Basques remain in danger, while Real Zaragoza is once again in trouble after suffering a 0-2 loss visiting Real Valladolid, it’s the first time under the era of Manolo Jimenez that the Aragonians chain three straight losses.

There are no changes among the first eight positions, but surely there were very interesting results, starting with the surprising defeat of FC Barcelona visiting Real Sociedad, especially since the score was 0-2 by minute 40 and it ended to be 3-2.  The result put an end to the unbeaten run of Barca on the league campaign.

Also shocking was the 0-5 of Real Madrid visiting Valencia CF, it was just the first time in the history that Los Ches reached the half-time mark allowing five goals at Mestalla. Another record was to witness the twelfth straight home victory of Atlético Madrid playing for la liga, this time over European candidate Levante UD (2-0). Something that doesn’t happen since the 1940’s, besides the Madrilenians haven’t allowed any goal at home within the last ten league games, that’s a record in the history of the club.

In any case Barca still have a comfortable lead over the second place (8 points). But the difference between the Europa League seats and mid-table is now smaller, and it’s that 10th place Real Valladolid is only four points below fifth spot Malaga CF.
