DEPORTIVO IN APRIL

03 Apr 2013
Mixed challenges for Deportivo in April; from a direct rival fighting to survive to an aspirant to the fourth spot, passing through two mid-table teams. The Galicians need to continue adding points in the war for the permanence.

Deportivo survived to March after adding seven of the twelve points in dispute; the Blanquiazul outfit remains at the bottom of the standings, but now only four points under salvation, which means that they cut the distance by more than the half as the difference was nine points at the beginning of March. The team is seeing the light at the end of the tunnel, but now they need to keep adding points. There are four matches in April, and all of them mean different challenges for Fernando Vázquez and his players.

In the first Real Zaragoza visit the Riazor in a direct meeting for salvation; Los Maños are marking the frontier between heaven and hell and a victory will be a huge step forward for Deportivo. The Aragonians aren’t living their best moment on this season, actually they are the only team in la liga that haven’t won yet in 2013 only adding five points in the second round.

Then Deportivo visit Levante UD; The Valencians are another team living a downward spiral; early in January they were sixth at the standings, but later spent seven straight matches without winning and were eliminated from the UEFA Europa League; now they are tenth, though only four points under the European seats, so the hopes of playing again in Europe are still alive, especially after the 1-0 win over Sevilla FC on the last weekend.

At the middle of the month, Deportivo return to the Riazor in order to meet another mid-table team: Athletic Bilbao; the Basques were the sensation on last season and they are considered to be the disappointment of this tournament. Right now they seem to be a demotivated team as they are far from Europe (9 points away) and also far from relegation (11 points). Still, it’s a dangerous rival as they have won three of their last four games in liga.

High-flyers Real Betis represent the last match of the month and probably the most difficult task as Depor have to pay a visit to the Benito Villamarín stadium. The Andalusians are currently occupying the last European seat and are even dreaming with a participating in the Champions League. However, their recent behavior hasn’t been consistent as they only added 8 of the last 15 points in dispute.
