HECTOR LEAVES THE CLUB

02 Aug 2006
H?©ctor Berenguel has left the squad after five years of satisfactory performances. The Almer?a-born defender secured his freedom from Deportivo and soon reached an agreement with Mallorca. He will play at Son Moix for the next two seasons.

Yesterday it was reported that H?©ctor was on the list of probable departures. Twenty-four hours later the club announced that the defender had been released from his contract. And later in the day it was announced that H?©ctor had signed for Mallorca.

H?©ctor arrived at Deportivo in the 2001/2002 season.  He played 29 games during that campaign, including 8 Champions League matches. He racked up similar numbers in the following season, but started having problems with Irureta and was soon relegated to the bench. That situation became clear after Deportivo lost against Osasuna in Pamplona during the 2003/2004 campaign (2-3). H?©ctor scored an own goal and Irureta never forgave him.

With the arrival of Caparr??s the situation didn't change. H?©ctor continued to stay on the bench and soon thought about leaving the team, but Caparr??s decided to give him a chance.  He was a normal starter at the end of the 2005/2006 season and always performed well.

One of H?©ctor's best characteristics was his willingness to play in any position. He usually performs as a right back, but both Caparr??s and Irureta used him as a central defender and even as a right winger in some circumstances. For example, Depor's fans will never forget the 2-1 Champions League win over AC Milan at the San Siro. Irureta had all his central defenders injured and he improvised with the duo of Romero and H?©ctor, a decision that led to the positive result.

In the end, H?©ctor played 133 games in the Deportivo shirt, including 26 in European competitions. He never scored a goal in La Liga, but hit the back of the net twice in Europe. One goal was against AEK Athens in the 2003/2004 Champions League and the other was in the Intertoto Cup against Buducnost.
