PREVIEW: PONFERRADINA – DEPORTIVO (LIGA)

24 Nov 2013
Depor travels to Castile & Leon trying to extend their positive rally on the road; Fernando Vázquez is repeating lineups in two straight games for the first time on the season. The rival is just coming out from an injury crisis.

STATISTICS:  A STRONG TEAM AT HOME
SD Ponferradina are living a low moment on the season; after  strong start that put the team second at the standings by matchday 06, the results began to be negative and they lost 4 of the next 8 matches. Now they’re ninth, three points below the promotion zone and seven points under Deportivo. But la Deportiva cannot be despised as it’s one of the strongest teams at home.

And it’s that SD Ponferradina have only lost four home meetings during 2013: 0-1 Vs. CD Lugo; 0-1 Vs. UD Las Palmas; 0-1 Vs. CD Tenerife and 0-2 Vs. CD Lugo. Only three Segunda outfits have a better record in the year that’s ending: UD Las Palmas (2), CD Numancia (2) and Córdoba CF (3).

The interesting fact is that Deportivo are a strong team on the road, actually the Galicians are completing their best away start clinching five victories in their first seven away games. It’s the best record at Liga Adelante and the second best among the top five second tier European leagues, only Burnley FC at the Championship have a better record (5 wins and 1 draw in 7 visits).

Despite SD Ponferradina were founded 91 years ago(1922) this is the first official meeting between these two clubs, this since they have only spent four seasons at Segunda A, never coinciding with Depor. Actually, it’s just the fourth club from Castile & Leon that the Galicians are facing during this century on a league competition (the other three are Real Valladolid, CD Numancia and CD Mirandés).

DEPORTIVO: THE KING OF THE ADVANTAGE
If there’s a virtue that characterizes this Deportivo is the faculty to administrate the advantages. During the present league season the Galicians took the lead in the score in eight different opportunities and they never dropped the three points, only two teams had did the same at Segunda: Real Jaén (6) and AD Alcorcón (5).

The virtue of Depor goes beyond that, because in the first seven games of this streak the Blanquiazul outfit didn’t allow any goal, it was until the eighth, the past clash against RCD Mallorca (3-1), that Depor leaked a goal after taking the advantage in the scoresheet. It clearly demonstrates the perfect control that Fernando Vázquez’s men have had throughout the season.

In Copa Del Rey, Depor were defeating Córdoba CF 2-1 in the second half, the Andalusians tied the actions and then the Galicians won the pass in the penalty shootout, though it was a very young team. The last time that Depor dropped points in a league game after taking the lead was in the visit to Real Betis (Apr 29), the Galicians took the lead thanks to a goal of Riki and the Andalusians got the equalizer in the second half (1-1).

Diego Seoane was commenting the issue during the week, ”Looking how we were during the summer it was difficult to think we were going to be like this now, but the hard work done so far was made for this. We are in a good moment; we are a very solid team. We are really a good team, which is what matters. It’s difficult for the rivals to beat us and we are a solid team.”

The spark is when the team has been in disadvantage, because in five meetings the team was losing and the numbers are devastating: in four of them they lost ending scoreless and in the fifth they managed to get a miraculous draw scoring at the last minute against Real Zaragoza (1-1). It’s the pending issue that Vázquez still has to fix.

Despite the five casualties at the squad, the coach is able to repeat the same lineup of the past victory over RCD Mallorca. It’s the first time on the season that he will repeat the team in two straight games. German Lux remains at the goal, Diego Seoane performs at the right side of the defense, Manuel Pablo does the same at the left, while the centre backs are Carlos Marchena and Pablo Insua.

Juan Dominguez and Álex Bergantiños are the centre midfielders, Javier Arizmendi attacks from the right wing, Luisinho does the same at the left, Juan Culio is the playmaker in the formation and Luis Fernández is the central attacker.

The five players staying at the injury room are winger Álvaro Lemos, right-back Laure, centre-back Kaká, centre midfielder Cezary Wilk and winger Antonio Núñez. Since there were only fifteen players available at the first team the coach picked three players from Depor B: playmaker Bicho, centre midfielder Paulo Teles and centre-back Uxío Marcos. The trio will be on the bench.

Culio said before the game that Deportivo must try to bear the initial impulse of Ponferradina, ”It’s an important game, facing a very difficult team, a strong side playing at their field, but we have our weapons and must try to bear the pressure of the first minutes.”

List of picked players (18): Lux, Fabricio (goalkeepers); Manuel Pablo, Seoane, Luisinho, Insua, Uxío,  Marchena (defenders); Álex Bergantiños, Juan Domínguez, Juan Carlos. Teles, Culio, Bicho (midfielders); Luis Fernández, Rudy, Arizmendi & Borja Bastón (attackers).

PONFERRADINA: CLEARING THE GHOSTS
The last five weeks have been pretty tough for coach Claudio Barragán, because the injuries stroke the team and complicated the plans for the games. It must be reminded that the budget of the club is only €4 million, the third lowest at Segunda División, and for this reason the squad is only composed by 22 players.

It can be compared to the current situation of Deportivo, but at least the Galicians have a base with the B squad, which already nurtured the first team, until certain point, during this campaign. In the case of the “Ponfe” their B squad is pretty weak and barely competes at Primera Regional Castile & Leon (Level 5 in Spain).

So, it isn’t strange that the team only picked five points within their last six games, reason why they are currently at mid-table after a promising start that put them at the second place by matchday 06. The good thing for them is that the problem is over as only winger Saúl Fernández is out of the game against the Galicians. The ex-Depor man hasn’t played on this season due to his damaged ankles.

In this way Claudio is able to present the same strong team that clinched the best results on the season. For the game it is expected a similar 4-2-3-1 figure compared to the squad that trashed Hércules CF (5-1) at the end of September.

Ex-Girona Roberto Santamaría is the goalkeeper, former Elche Javier Carpio performs at the right side of the defense, Óscar Ramírez covers the left sector, while Alberto Aguilar and Alan Baró are the centre-backs. Juan de Dios Prados ‘Juande’ and Jonathan Ruiz are the centre midfielders.

Acorán Barrera attacks from the right wing, Javi Lara does it from the left, Adolfo Enríquez García ‘Fofo’ is the playmaker and Brazilian Yuri de Souza is the central attacker. It has been an explosive season for Fofo, who is the Pichichi at the team with eight goals in favour, while ex-Pontevedra man Yuri has netted four goals. Combined both men have scored the 60% of the 20 goals conquered by Los Bierzanos on the league season.

List of picked players (19): Santamaria, Dinu (goalkeepers) Samuel, Alan Baró, Óscar Ramírez, Javier Carpio, Julen Castañeda (defenders); Juande. Marquitos, Jonathan, Acorán, Rueda, Cristian Fernández, Alberto Aguilar, Javi Lara (midfielders); Fofo, Juanjo, Yuri & Diego Sánchez (attackers).
