Depor reached the top of the standings at Liga Adelante after a new narrow victory; the defense and Lux were vital during a game that had a lot of fouls and little football. Culio capitalized the first penalty on the season for the Galicians.

For the first time on the season coach Fernando Vázquez was presenting the same lineup in two straight liga matchdays. German Lux was the goalkeeper, Diego Seoane covered the right-back position, Manuel Pablo played at the left, while Insua and Marchena were the centre-backs.

Juan Dominguez and Álex Bergantiños were the centre midfielders, Javier Arizmendi attacked from the right wing, Luisinho did it from the left, Culio was the playmaker and Luis Fernández the central attacker.

At Ponferradina, Claudio Barragán made a couple of changes at defense, but the offensive efforts were focused in Adolfo Enríquez García ‘Fofo’ and Brazilian Yuri de Souza. Around 1,500 Depor’s fans made the trip to Ponferrada for the game; the temperature was cold throughout the weekend, but the moment of the game it was 13 degrees Celsius.

The expected game by Depor: Los Blanquiazules waited at the back and gave the initiative to the locals. They seized a polemic play in which a penalty was whistled and later grabbed to a lead they defended without too many problems.

Nothing special occurred within the first ten minutes; the locals had the ball possession, but they didn’t create any harm, while Depor only had two free-kicks released by Culio that never represented a problem for local goalie Roberto Santamaría

Claudio Barragán said before the game that his team needed intensity and to become a “dog” up front. In the end they were highly involved in the game, but weren’t biting in attack. Depor, meanwhile, were following the script of past away games and gave the initiative to the rival while they were waiting to have a chance in a counterattack.

The first approximation for the Galicians was a cross of Juan Dominguez from the left that was intercepted by Santamaria (16’).  Two minutes later Culio made the first shot on target in the game, it was a drilling attempt from the left corner of the area, but it was an easy catch for Ponferradina’s goalie.

At middle of the half the locals excelled the 92% in terms of passing accuracy, while their ball possession was 74%. But they weren’t creating any harm before the goal defended by Lux. The explanation is that they were having and passing the ball at their side of the pitch, far from Lux, something that just made life easier for Depor.

But the picture changed starting at minute 25, because Los Bierzanos had two chances to claim the lead. In the first Acorán Barrera, the most dangerous player for Ponferradina throughout the game, attempted from the edge of the area, his strong shot was deflected by Lux and later repealed by the crossbar (25’). One minute later Depor’s goalie made an incredible save blocking with his fingers a header from Fofo, though the play was already invalidated due to an offside.

Ironically, Depor struck first after the locals decided to make a step forward. At minute 30 Luisinho fell down before the pressure of Carpio when both players were at the left side of the area, referee Gorka Sagués whistled the penalty, which was doubtful as it seemed that the local defender just fell down barely touching the Portuguese left-back. It’s the first penalty whistled in favour of Depor on this season. Culio threw the penalty to give the lead to his team.

After the goal the locals lost control over the actions; Depor dominated the game and didn’t suffer, the only danger for the locals came in a high cross that Lux barely deflected to corner-kick (41’). Before, Luis had a chance to score after picking a pass from Culio, but he sent the ball over the crossbar (37’).

Depor followed the expected scrip throughout the first part, with a calmed attitude and based on its strong defense, later they were favored by a decision of the referee. The difference compared to past visits is that they didn’t look so diluted in offense as it past opportunities, mainly as Culio was making accurate passes that brought some danger.

Another lead to defend, another three points. Poor football in the second part, the fouls prevailed and Deportivo suffered more due to the narrow score than for the success of the rival. Still, Lux had to make a couple of key saves to keep the three points.

The second part began with both sides putting a lot of pressure at midfield, Ponferradina had two straight opportunities with lateral free-kick thrown from the left wing, but both chances didn’t’ end with a shot on target. Depor responded with a wide shot of Culio (55'). One minute later Luis headed a volley at the left corner of the area, his curved attempt passed close to the left post of Santamaria.

Ponferradina were becoming desperate, they had the ball possession, but their inaccuracies in the passes left them harmless before the strong defense of Depor; actually the Galicians were looking more dangerous with their counterattacks.

Perhaps that’s the reason why Fernando Vázquez ordered the first substitution as Borja Bastón replaced Luis, because the Galician coach prefers the mobility of the Madrilenian for this type of game, however the actions became jammed at the middle of the half, mainly by the constant fouls committed by both sides (38 in the whole match plus 7 yellow cards).

During the week it was emphasized that the main virtue of Deportivo was to know how to keep the advantages during the game, and they demonstrated once again that this is their winning formula paving the way back to Primera. This was their ninth lead on the Segunda season  and they kept it clinching an eight clean sheet in the process fulfilling the expectations thanks to a solid defense, this time reinforced by the saves of Lux.

And it’s the Argentine keeper made two key saves in the second part, the first brilliantly deflecting a shot of Acorán (69’) and the second doing the same with a drilling attempt of the same player after a cross of substitute Marquitos (88’). In the middle of both plays the Galicians suffered more due to the narrow advantage than by the pressure of a diminished rival.

The only chance to score for the Galicians within the last twenty minutes was a cross of Manuel Pablo that Arizmendi missed by inches (81’). The second substitution for the Galicians was the entry of Juan Carlos claiming the spot of Culio. The Argentine man, together with Lux, were the best players in the game.

Another lesson by Deportivo regarding how to keep an advantage in the scoresheet. The Galicians waited for their opportunity and this time they got it from the penalty spot after a doubtful foul over Luisinho. Later the defense, plus Lux, did the rest to claim the fourth straight victory in the league.

The news was that Recreativo de Huelva lost at home against SD Eibar (1-2), so Deportivo are now the leaders at Segunda División. On next Saturday Depor face the Galician derby against CD Lugo (Riazor, 18h00 CET)
